Another food content creator told us we needed to check out Chan’s Chicken on a Stick at Minnesota State Fair

We’re glad we stopped. The chicken was wonderfully marinated and the chicken held on to the moisture well. Great flavor, great moisture, and a great char from the grill.

This is a sleeper pick at the Minnesota State Fair!

Caramel apple season came early at the Minnesota State Fair and it’s in a cup. 🍎 Loon Lake Iced Tea and their new caramel apple iced tea tastes like the last week of Summer and the first cool morning of Fall at the same time. Sweet without being syrupy, and the caramel actually shows up along with the tartness of the apple.

If you’re an iced tea fan, this is a must try.

Are you going to try it?

Minnesota’s Apple Fries may be the surprise of the Minnesota State Fair this year. 🍎

Warm apple slices, battered and fried until the edges go golden and crisp, buried under cinnamon sugar and a side of warm caramel. Somewhere between a fry, a fritter, and a straight-up dessert. These deep fried apples are the perfect sweet treat.

We HIGHLY recommend you give these a try — easily one of the best new items at the Minnesota State Fair this year.

Are you going to get these?

The best cheese curds at Minnesota State Fair is easy. It’s The Mouth Trap — full stop.

$9, a line that wraps around the building… and honestly? Worth every second you spend waiting. 🧀 Hot, salty, lightly battered, crispy and gone in about 90 seconds.

Iowa who? When you’re at the Minnesota State Fair The Corn Roast is a must stop. It doesn’t get much better than this.

And you know… butter and salt are mandatory.

You can also order them well done too if that’s your style!

A dessert-shaped plate of brain fog. A pie crust holds a filling of chopped pickles, pickle juice and cream cheese, crowned with a homemade savory whipped frosting made with ranch and Cholula hot sauce, then finished with a gherkin and a sprinkle of dill.

It looks like a tiny cream pie and tastes like the inside of a pickle jar had a baby with a ranch cup — briny, tangy, cool, spicy, and stubbornly refusing to be sweet. It’ll leave your brain confused.

Northwoods breakfast done right. We split the Denver skillet, the Carnivore skillet, and a buttermilk pancake on the side, and walked out very happy.

Both skillets are built on a foundation of hashbrowns griddled until the edges go golden and crackly, then piled high with meat and veggies. They don’t skimp. Portions hit that sweet spot where you leave full but not wrecked for the rest of the day.

My wife’s take on the Denver: everything tasted genuinely fresh, the peppers and onions sautéed down until soft and sweet without losing their bite, ham tucked throughout. Crowning it was an over easy egg, and when that yolk broke and ran down into the potatoes, it tied the whole skillet together. The sourdough toast is locally made, sturdy enough to scoop up every last bit, with that faint tang that plays well against all the richness.

My Carnivore skillet came loaded with quality meat, savory and well-seasoned all the way through. If I’m nitpicking, I’d have taken a few more of those crispy hashbrowns underneath for a starchier base to balance it out. But that’s a small quibble on a very good plate.

And the buttermilk pancake? Tall, airy, tender all the way to the center, with a lightly browned surface that soaked up the warm maple syrup they pour alongside. Everything a pancake should be.

Our server was so friendly and walked us through the menu and her recommendations. Worth the stop if you’re up north.
