Lots of flash flooding yesterday so couldn’t make it out to the garden plot yesterday. My apartment complex has offered me another plot but I’m not sure whether or not I’ll take it. I don’t really know what I’d put in it. I have 100+ plants in the first bed as I kinda just threw everything I can in my apartment in there. I’ll need to decide by next weekend but are there really many herbs I have left to grow? XD

Have you ever heard of the Toothache plant or as it is known scientifically, Acmella oleracea? Native to sunny and tropical Brazil, this plant has a long history of use in indigenous herbal medicine. However despite its namesake this plant is far more powerful than a remedy for an achy tooth. Come with me as we dive into the benefits of having this hidden gem in your personal home apothecary.

When Acmella oleracea first starts to grow it can resemble something akin to spinach or other leafy greens, but as the plant matures it can develop thick almost succulent stems. While the flowers of this plant are known for being the stars of the show, the leaves are delicious and can be used as a leafy green or seasoning to flavor dishes. Although bitter the taste is an acquired favorite of this apothecary, sauteed with vegetables for a hardy and tasty stir fry.

The compound responsible for the flower's powerful numbing effects is known as Spilanthol with the ability not only to be used to induce salivation, but more importantly is a fantastic local anesthetic. Along with this the plant contains multiple triterpenes, which along with Spilanthol, are able to offer powerful wound healing properties.

Here’s how I prepare mine:
Pick raw flowers in the morning after the dew drops, this ensures the highest essential oils content. It’s best to pick flowers that are between fresh buds and full bloom if want a strong concoction
Wash the picked flowers thoroughly and pat dry. Then place it into your container of choice. It's best if you find a tined mason jar but anything that can be made airtight will do.
Fill the container with high proof alcohol(I use vodka) until the flowers are fully submerged.
Shake well and seal for 4-6 weeks. If your container of choice is clear, find somewhere dark and cool light can degrade the alcohol.
After the waiting period strain the liquid into tinted dropper bottles and use as needed. I use mine both as a toothache remedy and a way to disinfect and numb cuts and bug bites.
Thank you so much and follow for more Apothecary Appreciation!
