Feelin’ a bit nutty this week…as least when it comes to bread. At the store, Grove City and Beaver there will be loaves of Toasted Pecan Brownie Bread, Peanut Butter Cornbread and Buckeye Babka (chocolate peanut butter), all of which are divine slathered with homemade Whipped Mascarpone Spread. The Ginger Oat also tangoes deliciously with the mascarpone and will be available this week. On the savory side, you’ll find Classic Italian, Whole Grain Sourdough, Mushroom & Chives Bread, Gentleman’s Black Bread, Focaccia, Roasted Garlic Sourdough Breadsticks and more! Yummy yummy!

Happy September, Everyone! Did you know that this month is known as Sourdough September around the world? Real Sourdough is bread made with just wild yeast/sourdough starter without any other additives or leavening agents (active dry yeast, baking soda, baking powder, etc). Bakers, both professional and homespun, celebrate the craft of sourdough by baking delicious breads. At Novel Breads, we are honoring Real Sourdough by making our starter available for purchase during the month of September. Pearl (the Novel Breads’ starter) will come in the form of dried flakes that can be reconstituted and instructions to building your starter. We will have some available at each location and you can preorder online at www.novelbreads.com. Furthermore, I am at the store most Fridays and offer the service of “ask the baker” any questions related to building your healthy starter or issues you may have with your creations. Celebrate Sourdough September by trying your hand at sourdough bread or at least enjoying a delicious loaf from us!

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to visit one of our fellow Book Crawl Bookstores after selling out early at the Beaver Farmers Market. We visited Moden Mercantile ( Moden Mercantile ) in New Brighton! We loved this fun, inventive store with interesting books and plants and other playful items. Definitely recommend them as a must see destination in town! We were also inspired by their tribute to Dolly Parton. In honor of her, they are giving children’s books away free to any child who stops in their store today. What awed us and them was how many people stopped in yesterday to donate children’s books to the cause (Check out the last image to see the stacks and stacks of donated books). We are happy to be part of a network of caring and creative booksellers like the owners of Moden Mercantile. They are open today 10-2 .

At the Novel Breads’ store this week, we have several traditional options like Classic Italian and Classic Sourdough. There are some seasonal selections like Zucchini Pesto Bread and Feisty Tomato as well as super savory options like the flavorful Roasted Cauliflower Baguettes and Bountiful Blonde. We have Sourdough Bagels and English Muffins, too. Open 10-2, Thursday-Saturday!

Ricotta Blossom and 60-Hour Sour are among the savory options this week at Novel Breads Co. The Ricotta Blossom is soft and dense and perfect for sopping up those delicious, Italian sauces. While the 60-Hour is the most sour of all our creations, because it is multigrain and has been fermented for at least 60 Hours. Stop in the store or visit us at the Beaver Farmers Market to find these and more!

A sneak peek at some of the breads available this week at all locations (Novel Breads Co., Grove City Market in the Park and Beaver County Farmers Markets), Lemon Ricotta, Feisty Tomato, Cinnamon Latte, Chocolate Rhubarb Ciabatta and Kaya’s Karmel Kornbread). There will also be focaccia, English Muffins and 60-Hour Sour for those looking for a traditional sourdough. Lots of tasty and seasonal options this week.

These Cherry Chocolate Twists look like one big loaf but are sliced into individual servings that will be available at the store today and the Beaver Farmers Market tomorrow. Infused with cherry and milk chocolate these Crème Fraiche brioche bites are an elegant touch to afternoon snack or breakfast treat. I originally made the Cherry Chocolate Twists last December when the Cranberry Library invited Novel Breads to provide unique creations to go with their Beatrix Potter Tea Party. For the tea party, they read The Tailor of Gloucester. I found the baking inspiration from the “red twist”, which was very important to the story. Stop in or stop by to get your own cherry chocolate treat. Supplies are limited.
