Storm aftermath at our farm. A downed tree, broken branches, and a big mess to tackle, but we're counting our blessings and getting to work.

The coop might not be brand new, and it might not be the prettiest, but it keeps the girls safe, dry, and protected at night—and it's where they lay all those farm-fresh eggs.
The truth is, they spend about 99% of their day outside, free ranging and, of course, doing their best to destroy my garden.

Today I added a little fresh bedding to help soak up some extra moisture and keep things smelling better. I don't use too much bedding or let the droppings build up because that can create heat. The deep litter method has its place, especially in the winter, but that's not the route I take this time of year.

The nesting boxes are cleaned out and topped off with fresh shavings every week to help keep the eggs clean and fresh. Every now and then—especially after a good rain—we might get a muddy or dirty egg, but I do my best to put preventative measures in place and give the girls a clean, healthy home.

Happy hens make the best farm-fresh eggs. 🥚🐓🇺🇸

One of our girls laid this unique egg today. The rough, bumpy texture is caused by extra calcium deposits during the shell-forming process. It doesn't hurt the egg and is just one of those neat little quirks that backyard chickens surprise us with!
Fresh eggs aren't made in a factory, and every once in a while you get a one-of-a-kind creation from the flock. ❤️🐓

🥬 6 cabbage
🫛 Lots of green beans
🥬 24 celery
🥒 2 cucumber plants
🍆 3 zucchini & 3 yellow squash plants
🌿 Several different herbs

And I'm still not done! 😅

Day 1 of planting the 2026 garden! 🌱

🍅 14 tomato plants — 7 different varieties
🫑 12 pepper plants — red & yellow
🧅 About 40 onions (I lost count 😅)
🥬 6 celery plants
🌿 4 oregano plants

That's not even close to half of what I have planned, and it still took about 3 hours!
I'm so excited for fresh produce right out the back door. There's just something special about walking outside and grabbing a tomato for burgers🍔
