Once upon a time, a young girl asked if she could take in her friend’s Holland Lop as a pet. Dad and I talked it over and decided that since the rabbit came with all of the stuff it needed we’d let Elizabeth have her own animal.

Her name was Margo. She was maybe 1 or 2 years old at the time. And for a long while she was in Elizabeth’s room. And then our living room. She terrorized Scout by thumping at him if he got too close. She was soft and fluffy and got a ton of loving during Covid when she did school and work with us.

Today, I went down to the cavy room to check on pregnant sows and saw that Margo was taking her last breaths. She had been hopping around normal as can be last night …. So I pulled her out and let her know how much she was loved as she passed. RIP Margo - thank you for the good times and teaching E (and Chuck) what having a rabbit was like 💕

Last week, we had an American litter with a teeny tiny little one weighing in around 50-55 g. He’s been named Prim - and is a little fighter! He’s 99 g now - almost doubled in size. While Prim isn’t the size of his siblings, we’re super happy with his growth and have slowed down supplements to 2-3 times a day. Good thing we have KMR on hand!

Elizabeth and I also judged a county fair last weekend - we both love working with kids and teaching them about their animals. I was honored to have been asked to take a photo with one of the exhibitors and his reserve champion single fryer 💚

Piggie babies everywhere!

On Wednesday, not long after I posted, the dilute solid sow had her pups and so did one of Elizabeth’s White Crested sows (3 total - only 2 with solid white crests)!

The dilute solid, Willow, had 5 pups but lost one GIANT pup. It was literally bigger than the two pups born 10 days before her. She also had one teeny tiny pup. Her name is Prim. I normally don’t name this early but this sweet little thing has been being hand fed by me - she’s a fighter for being so little. Excited to see 2 dilute solids and 2 golden solids in this litter

It honestly never ceases to amaze me how BIG the sows get when pregnant. This little dilute solid is pregnant for her first litter, has started dilating but has a ways to go still and she’s HUGE. Her skin is stretched so tight and I can feel the babies moving and kicking inside. The miracle of life 🥰

I love coming home from a busy day at work and fair and peeking downstairs to see new babies! 😍 Two big babies from KT’s Clove and Leibrand’s Calen. Can’t wait to see how they develop.

And to top it off - they were born on Chuck’s birthday! Happy Birthday to the man of the show, the one who puts up with all our shenanigans, and overall just supports his kids, animals and care of them.

We had 7 sows in breeding and while we knew they were pregnant, we didn’t realize how far along since we’ve been out of country for a Girl Scout trip.

Imagine my surprise when going downstairs this morning! 3 adorable babies - from a silver solid sow and golden solid boar. Loving the heads and ears 😍

Working in the barn today getting the home set up for the broilers today. 🐥 🧡

And spending a lot of quality time petting Bylur and Fanner. 🐐 🤎

Last weekend was a busy one! Elizabeth was asked to hold a cavy showmanship clinic for 4-H so Mom and Elizabeth headed there while Dad went to the Saginaw Valley show and showed the cavies! From all reports, he did a great job and I even got a photo of him brushing out Mick (Jagger - my long hair) from a judge 🤭

PM’s Mick earned an honorable mention under Kelly Hanson assisted by Chris Plank! Thank you Preston for entrusting him to me.

There’s nothing better than sunny days and nestboxes filled with shinies!! Kate and Sour had litters of reds on Thursday and Reba had her litter yesterday. Hoping the bad luck in breeding is finally broken ❤️

Today was the Heart of Michigan show and WOW! What a show it was!

Elizabeth took BOB and BOSB White Crested.

Lisa took BOB American and RESERVE IN SHOW with a Golden Solid - a baby born from a chocolate sow and one of Elizabeth’s GS boars. So it’s a win for us both! I also won BOB Silkie with a beautiful pig from Preston Marten.

Chuck took BOB and BOS in both shows for Satins with a chin doe (she has gorgeous fur!) and a red buck.

Thanks to all the wonderful judges for recognizing these animals 🧡 Congratulations to Kris and Beth for their wins on the cavy table too.
