We specifically grow an American-Chinese Hybrid chestnut and hand tend them through out the year.

🌰🍂 We were hard at work today at Baker Family Chestnut Farm — so much so that even our youngest little Bakers were out helping with the harvest! It was a truly beautiful day, and we gathered some of the largest chestnuts we’ve seen to date.

Chestnuts...A family affair

The Baker family has always been a bag of mixed nuts but in 2014 Lenore and David Baker decided to claim the chestnut for their family property in Southern Indiana. They had decided that it was the best way to be good stewards of the land and a means to move their family into the future.

Chestnuts had kept the communities alive during times of famine on the Old World. The nut is high in protein, has vitamin C, is gluten-free, low in fat, and contains complex minerals. The chestnut can be dried into flour for making bread or pasta and can be added to soups or eaten whole. The American chestnut tree nearly died out from a foreign fungus, but Chestnut Hill Tree Farm, where Lenore purchased her trees, has crossbred it with the Chinese chestnut tree, giving the American chestnut a vaccination of resistance.

Even though the trees have been planted and producing these last few years the Baker Family is just getting started. We look forward to serving the community with our unique style of farming and providing the best and most healthy food. Right now its just chestnuts but in time I’m sure we will see a myriad of fresh fruits, gourds, and nuts.
