It’s been a busy gardening season thus far and definitely has more to grow. Here is some of the various colors that are popping in our rows. Squash and zucchini has taken a beating with this beat and the bug season in full swing. The last photo is of some green beans that we have harvested and are blanching for preservation.

We tried this last year with maybe a 1/3 of the onions we planted living to a golf ball sized bulb. I must say, it definitely is not an issue with the onion sets provided by . The problem was with my ignorance to the onion’s needs while growing. That being said, we are using the 20-20-20 injectable fertilizer to feed the onions during their vegetative phase and a drip irrigation system to target their watering needs. We are walking into this with a better plan. Stay tuned for future updates and if you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

It’s that time of year again!!!! It’s time to get those seed potatoes in the ground for zone 8a. It’s also time to get your tomato seeds started for a strong spring start. We have changed focus slightly here at Horizon Farms. We are no longer wholesalers and will now be focusing on educating others on how to maximize your yarden (yard+garden). Stay tuned for more updates and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Here are a few of the variety of things growing alongside of the squash and zucchini I showcased in the previous post. I have several winter squash growing that we absolutely love. Spaghetti squash, honey nut squash, bush delicata, burgess buttercup, and the standard waltham butternut. I have a few eightball zucchini plants just to be different. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Thank you for all of the interest.

First decent harvest of the summer vegetable season. The zucchini is leading the charge with pattypan squash following closely in second place. The summer crook beck squash was slow to take off but is growing well now. I am looking forward to showing off the garden goodies this season and enjoying them ourselves. Our potato crop is growing nicely at the moment and I will let you know when they become ready. Thank you for all the support. Be sure to check in from time to time for the updates.

Why use a broad fork? Because it loosens the soil breaking up the compaction that tilling introduces. It also allows for water and air to reach deep into the soil. And lastly, it allows you to pull a 15 inch dandelion root out of the soil 3 days after the last rain.

Here are the before and after of the garden following the flame w**ding session. You really do not have to “burn” the w**ds to kill them. You just need to interrupt their cellular structures to achieve the outcome you desire. This is typically witnessed when the w**d slumps as the heat is applied in its direction.
