🐄 Myth Busting Monday: Do cows really have four stomachs?

❌ Myth: Cows have four stomachs.

✅ Truth: Not exactly! Cows actually have one stomach with four compartments—the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. Each compartment has a special role in helping cows digest their food, especially tough plant material like grass and hay.

Rumen: The largest compartment where microbes break down fiber.

Reticulum: Works with the rumen to trap and regurgitate food for chewing (aka “cud chewing”).

Omasum: Absorbs water and nutrients from the feed.

Abomasum: The “true stomach” where acids and enzymes break down food, just like in humans.

This amazing system allows cows to turn fibrous plants into energy, protein, and milk.

So, while it might seem like cows have four stomachs, it’s really one highly specialized stomach doing all the hard work!

Fun Fact: A cow can chew its cud for 6–8 hours a day to help with digestion!
