We are now accepting orders at basalticfarms.com

After a rough start and some new equipment the garlic is finally coming out of the ground. We have finished harvesting the 1.75 acres of soft necks (inchelium red and sicilian artichoke) now we are just processing the cured garlic while we wait for the hardnecks to finish drying down out in the field. Next week we should begin the process of pulling and curing the remaining 4.25 acres of hardnecks.

06/30/2022

The air sure is spicy tonight! Getting the sicilian prepped for harvest. Just over an acre this year for the sicilian... wish us luck!

You can order now at basalticfarms.com to have your order shipped once we finish harvest and have cured the crop..

Basaltic Garlic Farm Lady Beetle Life

Gotta love Lady beetles!
The farm has been fortunate enough this spring to have an absolute abundance of these astounding critters!
The larval stage is probably the most interesting to watch as these lil’ alligator looking monsters destroy anything in their path, glad I’m not an aphid.

Did the first test harvest of the year today. Still a couple more weeks before watering stops for sure! Many of the plants only have 1 or 2 brown leaves out of 10 to 12! The inchileum red below was a plant that had half of its leaves brown and i believe it was just out competed by the larger plants to either side. I don't know about you but I'm getting really excited to see what this year's harvest will bring in. With this much time left i can't wait to see how much bigger the bulbs get!

Get your certified organic seed at Basalticfarms.com!

Sales should be available starting August!

The Dutch White Clover (Trifolium repens) in our cover crop mix is mature enough to develop its nitrogen fixing root nodules!

Soil bacteria known as rhizobia live in these nodules, when the bacteria are actively fixing nitrogen the nodules are reddish pink inside.

Rhizobia convert nitrogen gas from the air into ammonium and nitrate. These compounds help produce protein for plant growth.

Nothing like a beautiful, green field of carbon feeding and protecting the soil!

This field is where we grew our garlic last year. As part of our regenerative practices we rotate the garlic and plant cover crops.

Our soil is quite sandy, lacking organic matter, so the cover crop mix we use leans more towards creating good soil carbon.

In this field we have barley and rye grain for carbon production, there’s some turnip in there also to help with compaction and infiltration. We also have Austrian winter peas, crimson clover and dutch white clover for nitrogen fixation. Theres even a bit of mustard left over from last falls cover crop that volunteered.

Check out our new foliar feeding implement!

Foliar feeing is done once a week on the farm, it helps the young garlic establish strong roots and feeds our soil biology.

We use fish and seaweed emulsion, both OMRI approved and produced in the USA!

04/11/2021

Finally finished fabricating the dry boom for the sprayer we picked up second hand. Foliar feeding is going to be so much easier this year! It always feels good to finish a protect especially if it means no more backpack sprayer destroying my back.. going to calibrate it tomorrow and get some fish emulsion on the garlic asap!

Recently I was lucky to find the most amazing garlic ! I will not buy grocery store garlic again! I bought to plant in our garden, but once I cooked with their garlic, I was hooked. The big cloves peel so easily and the taste is delicious! I encourage all garlic lovers to check their website and order some for eating and/or planting .
Thanks for the Inchelium Red and Siciliano seed stock this season. They really produced well in North Georgia zone 7b/6a.
540 garlic plants coming along nicely. Thanks Basaltic Farms for the great organic seed stock!
We purchased this Chesnok Red garlic from Basaltic Farms this past fall and it has turned out AMAZING so far!
