With lambing season underway, we thought we would share one of the methods we use in tracking our lambs to make wise business decisions for our farm.
We’ve all heard the saying, “numbers don’t lie”. At Serenity Sheep Farm, we keep records of our lambs, starting the day they are born, and we use that data to guide management decisions by showing how both lambs and their dams perform over time. We weigh our lambs every 30 days to compare their growth rates. We calculate their daily weight gain and sort them from highest to lowest to highlight individual performance. We use the weights from birth to weaning to help evaluate dam productivity. After weaning, we focus on lamb performance to support decisions about future management and breeding priorities.
Shown below is data from our 1st round of lambs in 2026. These lambs are Australian White embryo transfers that include frozen embryos from Tattykeel and fresh embryos from our own donors and our ram, Maverick. They were born at the end of January, so this is the first bit of data on them. The last column shows their daily weight gain in lbs. As time goes on and we continue to capture data, they will start separating themselves and it becomes very clear on paper who is in the top percentile and who is in the bottom percentile. All lambs in Round 1 have already been spoken for, but we will lamb again in April… Round 2 will consist of fullblood Australian Whites, F1’s and F2’s.
