Bearding is when large numbers of honey bees gather on the outside front of the hive, forming a cluster that looks like a beard hanging from the entrance. It’s usually normal behavior, especially during warm weather.

Common reasons bees beard include:
• Heat management: Worker bees leave the hive to reduce crowding and help keep the brood nest cooler while other bees fan their wings to circulate air.
• High humidity: They may beard to improve ventilation and reduce moisture inside the hive.
• Strong colony: Healthy, populous colonies are more likely to beard during the summer.

Bearding is most common:
• In the late afternoon or evening after a hot day.
• During temperatures above about 85°F (29°C).
• When nectar is flowing and the colony is very busy.

Puffing away!! In the smoker we have pine shavings and pine needles.

“Smoking the bees” is a standard beekeeping technique, and it helps in a few important ways:

1. Calms the colony
When you puff smoke into a hive, it masks the alarm pheromones that bees release when they feel threatened. Without that “danger signal,” the colony is much less likely to become defensive or sting.

2. Distracts them with feeding behavior
Smoke triggers a survival instinct—bees think there may be a fire. So they start filling up on honey in case they need to abandon the hive. A bee full of honey is physically less able (and less interested) in stinging.

3. Gives you safer access to the hive
Because the bees are calmer and distracted, you can inspect frames, check brood, or harvest honey with much less stress on both you and the bees.

4. Helps move bees gently
A little smoke can encourage bees to move off frames or away from areas you need to work on, without crushing them.

Smoke is a tool for peace not force.
