Cheers to... less drinking? 🥂
For decades, grabbing a drink has been the ultimate go to for American socializing. But a major cultural shift is happening right now, and we have the data to prove it.
According to a massive historical dataset from the Gallup poll studies, alcohol consumption in the US has officially hit an all time low.
Gallup has been tracking this since 1939, and the latest numbers show a dramatic change in how we live.
According to this Gallup poll study, here are the quick stats on how many Americans say they drink alcohol:
👉 The standard: For nearly a century, Gallup found that the percentage of Americans who drink pretty much stayed between 60% and 70%.
👉 The peak: We saw the highest rates of drinking back in the late 1970s, topping out at 71%.
👉 The drop: Fast forward to today, and that number has plummeted all the way down to 54% in the latest Gallup poll.
So what is changing?
We are watching a major cultural pivot in real time. Gallup studies point to a few huge reasons for this decline, showing that our mindset around drinking is totally evolving:
🌿 Health concerns are surging: For the first time in Gallup tracking history, a literal majority of Americans now believe that even moderate drinking is bad for your health.
🔋 Gen Z leading the way: Younger generations are drinking significantly less than older generations, choosing to focus on wellness instead.
🍹 Amazing alternatives: The market for non alcoholic beers, mocktails, (Kingdom Events) and fun alternative drinks has totally exploded, so it is easier than ever to hang out without a buzz.
The big takeaway?
This is not just a minor random dip. The Gallup poll shows this is officially the lowest recorded percentage of alcohol use in modern American history.
The definition of a good night out is being totally rewritten.
