Garlic Planting!!

We have about 650 plants in the ground so far!!

As we are planting we start with breaking up our cloves doing a hydrogen peroxide soak for 10 minutes to help kill bacteria present from last year then put right into an at least 30 minute organic fertilizer soak before planting

We plant our rows 1 foot apart and space about 6 inches apart in the rows.

Once all the garlic is in we will put a 6 inch layer of straw on top for winter

We are in full on garlic prep and planting time! Typically I plant into where the potatoes were since they typically use about the same amount of space, for prepping the beds we w**d, level and spread aged sheep manure down so it’s now ready to plant! Garlic are heavy feeders. We are hoping to double production again and plant around 3,000 this year! So look for updates on how we plant our garlic!

We have started processing our luffa! 7 down and about a dozen more to go! This year the biggest difference we tried was stepping on the luffa to break the skin from the inner sponge versus baking on low in the oven to help with peeling. It did speed the process up this year without having to wait for luffa to bake and cool also noticed the luffa stayed a lot whiter this year not baking.

If you’re interested in luffa and have a request on the final size of the luffa sponges let us know as soon as possible. As we cut our luffa to size as we process.

Reminder to check your weather forecast for upcoming frost. We won’t have frost potential until Friday night but we have rain coming all day tomorrow so using today to get everything harvested that can’t handle a frost. So, will be a busy day in the garden

*we currently have no plans to do anymore farmers markets this season as most farmers markets are done for the season and we are turning our attention to luffa and sweet potato harvest and to prepping and planting our garlic which takes us usually at least a couple weeks

Did you know you can bake and eat pumpkin seeds!? They are really healthy and provide lots of zinc, magnesium and fiber among other nutrients!

So, whether you are processing your pumpkins for pies, soups or desserts or just cleaning them out for jack o lanterns remember to save your seeds to bake for a snack! We add some olive or avocado oil with salt and bake at 350 for about 15-20 minutes!

Out of 32 lambs so far we have ended up with 4 bottle lambs. 3 are triplets. We end up with bottle lambs due to the ewe not producing enough milk for various reasons sometimes we don’t know why, sickness or sometimes they can’t produce enough for triplets or we lose the ewe. The triplets here are about 5 weeks old and the white hair sheep is about 3 weeks old. Currently they get fed milk replacer 3 times a day. Plus creep feed and alfalfa.
