The idea came several years ago while standing in the middle of a hay field on a cool November day, with sounds of barking squirrels coming from the nearby woods. We were thinking, what could we do with this land? Should we plant tomatoes, berries…maybe an apple orchard? No, it had to be something way cooler and much, much more difficult to grow. Clearly, we had to raise HOPS!
Having grown up on a small farm in western NY state, Merritt was born with a green thumb. Paula became the cheerleader and chief logistics officer. The idea sprung to life after joining the Ohio Hop Growers Guild and attending their annual conferences, each year gaining more knowledge and confidence that we could actually do this. We studied trellis design, spoke with other growers, toured hop yards, and tasted lots of beer. Several varieties of hops were ‘tested’ on our little farm, providing us with hands-on experience in nurturing this vivacious yet sensitive plant.
In the spring of 2019 we executed our plan, installing a one-third acre trellis system complete with drip irrigation. Having thought through nearly everything (because that’s the sort of people we are), in June we brought home 100 Cascade, 100 Galena, and 100 Cashmere from Sandy Ridge Farms in Zeeland, MI to our beautiful Lisbon, OH. We’re very excited for our future and the opportunity to support local breweries with fresh, dried, or pelletized hops. Sure, it’s a crazy idea. But it might just work!
