This is Nathaniel Davis Jr of Ronin Leo Urban Farm one of the founding members of the North Memphis Farmers Collective. One of the first purposes of the collective was to pursue markets to sell our produce ,and to show that something positive and successful can come out of the North Memphis Community. I felt that with our individual talents that we were primed to shake up the urban farm scene, and for a time we did.But faith decided we take different paths, and although I lament about what could have been ,its for the best.Adam and I still do some collaboration at the market, and I've been helping Andy a lot. One of the things I've leaned in farming city lots is respect should be given by all parties involved, the farmer should make and keep the lot prestine, the neighborhood should contribute to the cause by deeds not talk, and finally City of Memphis found out whose doing positive things in the inner city and help them.

A climate change solution beneath our feet
When we think of climate change solutions, what typically comes to mind is the transportation we use, the lights in our home, the buildings we power and the food we eat. Rarely do we think about the ground beneath our feet.

Friends, you know I work hard for local food access in the Memphis community. Our food access is directly tied to nature, and one school, Libertas, is raising funds to expand its permacuture program! We already have a full fledged composting program, chickens, about 3 acres of veggies and flowers! We want to expand with a hoophouse, build a fence, re up on tools, etc! If you donated to my kickstarter last year, you should know that the North Memphis Farmers Collective is helping by making the tractor we got available to the school! Help us out! Can you give now and/or share!

For the past decade I have been passionately committed to one mission. Leadership in the creation of a sustainable, self-sufficient ecosystem in Memphis. As I have gained recognition for my work in education and the operation of SmartMule Urban Farms, I have equally gained recognition for difficult, combative and alienating behavior as I am uncompromising in my views on how to effect change and create open inclusive community. I remain fearless and a risk taker, however, recent conflicts in my community work and private life have challenged me to recognize the need for more balance in my approach. This past fall, my love, Stephanie Diane Ford, was unjustly assaulted by two guests in my home. Because I knew the guests and considered one an apprentice for nearly 10 years, my response was insensitive and did not prioritize her security and comfort. Stephanie's partnership with SmartMule in 2015 was pivotal to the growth of the business and had a transformational impact to my mission within the Memphis community. Reflecting on these challenges has taught me the value of compromise and equal partnerships as I have come to realize that I lost my right hand in the incident trying to keep two left feet. We learn each day in the school of life and these growing pains have fueled me with more experience and determination to continue the work for community, food access, and economic change in Memphis.
