🌽 It's sweet corn season! 🌽

My kids are true Midwestern kids and love their corn so every year we try to make sure to put some up and freeze it so we can have corn all winter long. This year I was lucky enough to have some pretty cute helpers!

Things have been a little extra chaotic around here this last week as we welcomed our newest family member into the world last Tuesday. We have been trying to soak in as many baby cuddles as possible, but also have still been keeping up with the normal chaos.

Earlier this week we loaded the whole family up to move some hay. As you can see, Lane took his new role as big brother very seriously and stepped up to help roll up straps by himself. So very grateful to be raising our kids in this lifestyle with a willingness to learn! πŸ’•

Another late night spent out in the barn. Our last gilt farrowed yesterday in the absolute miserable heat so processing baby pigs was on the agenda for tonight.

Unfortunately, she did not have quite such a smooth farrowing as the others, but had 6 live that are doing great. We aren't feeling so positive about how things will turn out with mama as we could tell tonight she still was very uncomfortable and hadn't eaten anything yet. After working the babies, we attempted to help her out, but were unsuccessful so we provided some antibiotics to try and manage infection. We will continue to try our best to help her out, but unfortunately there's not a whole lot that we can do that makes sense for both us and her which is another very unfortunate reality of raising livestock.

Another great set of babies were born overnight! This mama is actually a sister to the one that gave birth a few days ago and is also a great first time mama. She had 13 babies!

Because of the heat and us anticipating this batch of babies, we waited to process the first batch so today we processed all 21 babies; 10 males and 11 females. We didn't beat the heat, but all babies got their shot of iron, teeth clipped, and the males are all castrated so we'll consider that a win! Now just 1 more gilt needs to come in and we'll be all done farrowing for a little bit.

Love when our girls know what to do and bring a nice batch of 8 babies into the world without any extra help! One of the three gilts we've been watching got the job done and is already a great little mama.

I love my Red Wattles, but these Berk babies sure are cute!

Raising good, quality food for my family and spreading education on where that food really comes from is always one of my top priorities. Seeing my kids get excited about growing their own food and helping with the process is the extra cherry on top of it all!

Ava was very excited that she was able to pick her first cherry tomato and couldn't wait to eat it. πŸ…

Long days of hard work and sacrifice aren't hard to come by and often make you question if what you're doing is worth it. But somehow God seems to sneak in and give you that little extra reassurance through some of the most beautiful moments.πŸ’•
