Great day to be cooking! Sunny and hot in the Rio Grande Valley. Killer V’s stayed close this weekend and joined in on the fun in San Benito’s Texas Independence Day Celebration. A little over 40 teams going after a nice purse for those blessed enough to get a call or two.
We are in the middle of our cook right now. Fiesta Seasonings and Junior Urias Rub for Grub have been doing their Thaaang so far.

Folks we hadn’t posted anything from this past weekend and almost for got lol. Guys so glad for you guys turning out for BBQ Church. I’m amazed what God is doing among our BBQ Community. These barrels from Aaron Lesly have been doing the job. It’s been a curve ball but we are getting some what the wood to it. Since there was an Overall Grand we decided to do everything 😊
5th Fajitas
3 beans
3 Chef Choice
1st Ribs
7th Brisket
Killer V ended up with another 3rd Overall 😊
Congrats to all who got some calls. Blessings to everyone .

Killer V in Uvalde..... My brother writes a whole lot better than I do 😊. I also want to give Wade a shout for giving BBQ Church the opportunity to invite everyone on Saturday night. Also prayer was done in a couple of occasions this weekend as well. Thank you Steve and Scott with Kids Q for the opportunity as well. Blessings to all and see u on the next one👍

Just back home from another great event The Briscoe Ranch Cookoff ran by Wade Carpenter and his team. First class! Hard to think of any cookoff that compares to the way he takes care of the cooks. Thank you Wade!
Things started out on Friday morning as we left began with what Cruz Tijerina called “blizzard like condition”. Nonetheless, we bulldozed our way through the 1-2” layers of snow and ice. By the time we reached the check point it was clear sailing.
After Friday nights cooks meeting, Wade and his crew blessed the cooks with a delicious roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans , fluffy hot roll, and sweet iced tea! Wow! That stuff was good!!

Saturday morning was near freezing as we lit up our barrels (thank you Aaron Lesley #Texastrashcans) Only the 2nd cookoff for us using barrel smokers for ribs and brisket . In a field of approx 170 solid teams including well known celebrities in the mix like Mo Cason, home town favorite Ernest Cervantes, and recent World Food Champion Fred Robles , we second guess ourselves with this move. Oh well.

Bbq was outstanding as usual with about 40-50 cooks in attendance and several hundred views on Facebook. Hector, Thanks for bringing the Word.

Overall, I didn’t think we had a bad cook yesterday. Chicken was pretty much our normal chicken, ribs were fine, the brisket turned out to be ok as get an initial scare (we thought it felt tough before slicing...no jiggle 🙁)

Once again, Wade se s**o la dagar (did a great job😁) by starting awards on time as promised and got it all done in about an hour including kids Q awards!

Now how did we do? Ehhh, not bad but not great. We didn’t get a top ten call on either of the 3 meats so of course we didnt win the event (Congrats to Matias Serrata for earning GC and to JD Henley on his RGC. ), but we were close. Our ribs and brisket both came in 11th and came with a little cash for a top 15 call. Like most cooks, we hope to get at least one call with these kind of loaded fields. We came away with two and felt very grateful. As on of our friends commented as the scores were being projected on a screen and right before the GC announcement, “ there sure are A LOT of triple zeros up on that screen”. Lol ... ya.

On to next week for our final event of 2017 at the Bert Ogden Christmas cookoff.

Blessings to all as we remember that Christ is the reason for the season!

A BIG THANK YOU to all our friends in the BBQ circuit who donated their briskets for us to share with this needy colonia. It was truly a blessing to be able to feed all these people and share the love of Christ.

Special day, yesterday! It was great to see people love on people. We were blessed to partner with Pastor Roy Montez and Lucero Del Norte Community Church and celebrate the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ in that community there. We want to give a special shout out of thanks to Grupo Salvacion for their partnership with some great music, the BBQ community who donated a mouthful of brisket that fed well over 300 people, and Roel Villanueva for capping it off with a great fireworks display. RLCC family may God continue to bless us with opportunities to love on others, thanks for your generous response. When we said to each other "We Will Love" you responded with the love that reflects who God is and his light shone brightly through you yesterday...to him be all the glory!

We jumped from 9th in the state to #6!!! 😃

Good morning Killer V fans and friends! Yes we were back in the saddle again this weekend. We headed to San Benito's Texas independence Celebration for the first time. While a few of our Valley top cooks chose to head north to try to win some big dough, many chose to stay like The Boot Company Cruz Tijerina, Rio Valley meats Fred Robles, Chillin and Grillin, Team SAS, Iron Faith, Texan Grillers, Propit Balde Garcia, smokin Toros, Al Valez, and a few others that usually get calls. So our work was cut out for us to say the least.

On Friday, we decided to throw our hat in for the dessert comp. Last time we did dessert we, came out with a first place call. Could we repeat? We sure were hoping.

Saturday was simply a beautiful day to cook. Not to hot and not to cold temps with cloudy skies ended up being a perfect mix. We kicked off the day with our BBQ Church which was very well attended again. Always good to start he day giving Glory and Praise to our Creator.

The event reenacted the Battle at the Alamo a few times throughout the day. The booms of canons firing echoed through the campsites as an eerie reminder of what once took place in this great state of ours.

Now for the results. Our dessert was not a 1st place call this time, but we will take the 2nd place finish just as well. By the way, first place beat us by one point!!! :-(
We didn't cook beans this week, since all three of our bean cookers were busy doing other things. Oh well. Our chicken was really good this week, well at least I thought it was and s few judges agreed giving us a 6th place call. Our ribs were also pretty good and we were blessed with a 5th place award. Finally, our brisket was also really good (pretty much the same as last week) and it received our highest call at 3rd place.
That gave us a total of 19 points and put us in a 3 way tie for first place overall with Chillin N Grillin and Team SAS!!!! As many know and in case you don't, whenever there is a tie as is the case in this instance, the brisket call is the tie breaker. Since Chillin N Grillin earned a 2nd place brisket (1st place chicken), that secured them the Grand Champ spot. We grabbed the Reserved Grand Champ spot and team SAS came in 3rd overall.

Praise the Lord, a GC last week followed by a RGC this week. We will take it! Our next team Cookoff is not until April 17th at the Bass Pro shop in Harlingen, however, Hector will be a one man show on the 10th at HUBphest.
A big thanks to Junior Urias Rub for Grub seasonings. Also, our entry fee sponsor this week was Miracle Mile- Bingo Gardens from Pharr, Texas. Thank you both for believing in us.
Congrats to Chillin N Grillin and Team SAS along with all the other teams to got to walk on the stage.
Til next time BBQ fanatics!

Good evening Killer V fans and friends!! What a weekend following a huge cook off at Smokin at the Rio which was fun and a little dissappointing. We went into the 2nd annual Holy Smoke Cookoff hoping to redeem ourselves just a bit.
We started off Friday evening with a shrimp jackpot in which I forgot a add a major ingredient to our crab stuffed shrimp. 😢 hate when I do that.

After a chilly night, we held our usual BBQ Church at 6:45. Praise the Lord for the great message Hector shared. I know it had an impact on several cooks. This is why we do what we do. We are about our Fathers business! Sharing His Word wherever He leads us.

The day turned out to be simply gorgeous! Couldn't ask for better cooking conditions. And now for the results:

PRAISE THE LORD AGAIN! Killer Vs were blessed with a Grand Championship today!!!!!!!
Our calls were as follows:
4th shrimp jackpot. (Major ingredient missing killed us.... Completely my fault, but hey we placed 4th!)
4th Beans
9th fajita
3rd Chicken
1st Brisket

Our ribs decided to take a well deserved vacation. LOL.
Congrats to our good friend Cruz Tijerina for his RGC and to all the other great cooks who had calls like Balde from ProPits, chillin and Grilling, A Ver Que Sale, Fred Robles, Steve and Liz, Larry S., Arnie, Danny L, and several others.

Thanks again to Junior Urias for his support and sponsorship. If you haven't used his seasonings, what are you waiting for? Here's the proof of how good his stuff is! Juniors Rub for Grub, you need to get ya some!

We cook again next week so let's see how it goes.
Til next time!

Smokin On The Rio 2015!

Smokin on the Rio is held annually in our home town and is the largest Cookoff in the valley with this year having 179 teams competing. Wish I could say it was also the best paying Cookoff but it's far from that. Given the number of teams competing most would assume that would make sense , but it's not. Oh well. Last year we had a great run and were amazed that out of all the competitions we did, we either won enough prize money to recoup our entry fee or made some to save for future events except for one competition... Yep.. This one seems to always eat our lunch. We have been flying high so we were hoping that would end this year.
After what seems to be several years, Hector decided to come out of retirement and once again make Pan de campo. When we first began competing many years ago, we really only had hopes for calls on pan de campo or beans. Beans have always been pretty consistent for us, but Hector chose to put pan aside for a while and focus on our IBCA meats more primarily on our brisket.
As the drizzle began to fall again and temps holding steady in the low 40s, we were blessed to get a couple of calls. The pan de campo call came in at a 4th place. Not too bad. Looks like we will be pushing Hector to cook some more in future comps. :-) The only other call we got was on our ribs which came in as a 5th place rib. We did make finals table on brisket and even though I thought our chicken was one of the best we've had, it was a no show.
A big shout out and congrats to our good friend and brother in Christ, Fred Robles for his GC and to our other friend Balde Garcia owner of ProPits for his RGC.
As always, thank you Junior Urias for sponsoring our team with your spices! A big congrats to Team Iron Faith for their 2nd place rib and to all the other teams who received calls.

Oooh and BIG congrats to my son Noah for his 2nd place kids Cookoff award.. Like father like son! ;-)

We cook the the two weekends so let's see how we do.

Til next time folks!

BPOA Cookoff In Brownsville!!

Third Cookoff of the year for us yesterday at the BPOA in Brownsville was a blast. Can't ask for much better weather. We were kind of nervous knowing we were going to be right next to the border. Some knucklehead from Mexico could find it funny to shot a round this direction and hit someone. Of course that's probably just my paranoia speaking.

The morning started out with our largest attendance for our BBQ church to date! Many know that we love to cook but our passion is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. :-)

The usual cooking teams from the valley were spread out among three comps taking place at the same time, however, we had nearly 40 teams to contend with. A few regular names, a few who cook sparingly, and a lot of back yard cookers.

After turning in all our meats, we were very pleased with all which is never a good thing! LOL! Our usually consistent jackpot fajitas and beans took a trip into Mexico to grab some lonches cuz they were no shows at award time. Our chicken came in 5th, ribs brought us a 7th, and our brisket hit a 3rd. We accumulated 18 points which was enough to win Reserved Grand Champ and just one... Just ONE point from GC!!!.
A big congrats to Big Nasty Jesse Ruiz for their GC!
A huge congrats to our brothers team, Iron Faith, for their three calls including a first place rib. Also congrats to our other Q friends to received a call, Arnie, Larry, Michael, Al, Rick and any others I forgot to mention.
Of course we can't forget to mention Junior Urias Rub for Grub which continues to be a consistent hit for our meats. Go get ya some!
Finally we give all the glory to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who blesses us beyond measure.

Smokin' on the Rio is next at the end of the month. We will let you know how that goes!
From the Killer V Cooking team, keep those pits lit!

That one time we did a "hat trick" (three first place calls) and boy we needed it that day with the Killer V Cooking Team nipping at the heels. They did not give out trophy's that day but rather cash in those little white cups that were marked with the placings, those became my trophy's that day and I still have them as a great memory, someday I'll have grand kids that I can tell all these stories and adventures Terry and I experienced on the smoke trail. Y'all have a great day #KeepTheSmokeLight #MakeItWork #ArnieTex #SmokinLonestar
Could you use this for brisket ?
Killer V's supporting the IBCA . We had a great time meeting up with everyone . Happy BBQ' ing my friends . See you down the road .
