Alex Shimel is moving up. He's learning how to run the combine in corn. Jacob D Shimel has a job now during the week and isn't able to help as much this year. It won't be long and we'll have Charlie running the grain cart.

This is our first field of corn, the moisture is lower than normal this year and the yield is about average for our farm so far.

Carl came back to life today. Rebuilding the motor in one of these tractors is quite the project. For those that don't know he blew a hole in his number five piston this spring doing tillage. He'll go to work right away on our grain cart. Hopefully he behaves, it's about that time of year when things get really busy.

The Shimel Pulling Team had some success at the tractor pulls today. This was Alex's first time pulling. He came away with a 3rd place and Jacob got a 4th place.

Our shop was busy this weekend. Jake kept saying I needed to turn down the temp but Hannah appreciated the good lighting. Alex thinks it needs to be bigger.... I think it's a mess, just like the real thing would be with that many projects at once....( We don't have a shop but it's on the list.) I pulled Carl apart and found a hole in #5 piston. Jake is working at making a bottom for his truck cab. Alex pulled the rear axle from his fourwheeler and rebuilt his bumper. Hannah changed her windshield. A bit hot but we got a lot done.

Seed plots, for those who don't know almost every year we plant a Renk corn and soybean plot. Generally we plant 10 or so different types of seeds to see what yields the best, along with moisture, test weight, and disease resistance in our soils. Alex helped me plant the bean plot on the corner of highway K and Q. Alex is a crazy hard worker and great helper when he knows what to do. This job was one of them. I don't think I've ever been able to switch seeds as quickly without him. Thank you Alex now let's see how these seed varieties compare.

Here are a couple pretty cool night shots of Jake driving Clyde working up a dusty field. The not so good part of farming is Carl our beloved John Deere has a belly ache. It lost power while Jake was driving and started smoking out of both ends. After giving it an exam in the field Alex limped it back to our garage. Number 5 cylinder is dead. Now we know what I'll be doing next month....

We had a busy weekend putting seeds in the ground. Jake and Alex chisel plowed over 100 acres on Saturday, that's the most we've ever done in a day.

Signs of spring, Jacob Shimel is planting tractors again in hopes that more grow, or they grow bigger? We don't really know but this is definitely a sign of spring on our farm.
