Well we had our inspection last week and as we were getting all the things done I was thinking to myself…..what is the hardest part of what we do? Is it the long hours of harvesting when the weather isn’t cooperating and it’s raining a ton, but the we have to get things ready for CSA anyway? I...

Darling book!

Have you read or listened to Uncle Rick’s novel, The Runt? If not, you’re missing out. The story centers around Kit Carson Hunt, a small boy who has always felt bad about his size, and his dog Runt, a mongrel pup that seems no good for hunting. However, God works in mysterious ways, and by the end of the story Kit learns that God always knows best, and he has a plan for our life. Kit learns that when it seemed like life had taken turns for the worse (for himself and Runt), God was using it to fulfill his plan.

This action-packed novel is sure to be a winner with readers of all ages, and even adults! It’s available in book form, e-book or audio book, so you can access it any way you want!

Well friends, the season is certainly changing! The planting frenzy hasn’t finished and the weeds have certainly arrived! Along with the cicadas! We had fun hunting them yesterday and found 136! (Update: we stopped counting!) The chickens LOVE eating them, though I wouldn’t try them personally. ...

This season our Herbal Shares are available again! Don't forget to add it to your CSA! You just might see this yummy shrub in it!

Have you ever made a shrub?

Not the kind you grow in the garden, of course, but the drink - sweet and sharp and brimming with fruit and herbs.

As with all good things, there’s an element of patience - of delayed gratification to it.

For this one, you’ll start by packing a jar with strawberries and herbs, then you’ll cover them all with raw apple cider vinegar.

And then you wait. And, over time, the fruit and herbs release both their flavor and medicinal compounds into the vinegar. Next, you’ll strain the liquid and then swirl in enough honey to buffer the vinegar’s bracing acidity. Use it as a marinade, or as the base of a vinaigrette, or - even better - stir some into an icy glassful of sparkling water for a super refreshing drink.

This version combines strawberries and cheerful herbs such as chamomile and thyme which help lift a worn spirit with schisandra berry - an herb that improves the mood and helps your body adapt to stress. But, beyond botanical medicine, it just tastes delicious.

This recipe comes from my new cookbook - Vibrant Botanicals: https://nourishedkitchen.com/vibrant-botanicals/

Adding to the flock! — Day Spring Farm, VA

Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

We have been adding heritage breeds to our flock of chickens. Why? The main breed we keep is a commercial breed meant for laying large amounts of eggs over a year or two and not being super winter hardy. We love them for what they do for us, which is make a lot of eggs and eat our grass and bugs! T

Our Story

Our goal for Day Spring Farm is to nourish our family and friends, or our “farm-ily members” as we call you, with the highest quality, beyond organic meat, milk, eggs and vegetables. To raise the highest quality meat and produce we use no chemicals, no GMO’s and no soy. The animals are raised on pasture, walking over acres of land, enjoying the sunshine and fresh air, foraging naturally like animals were created to do. That means no growth hormones, stimulants, GMO’s or antibiotics – just the way God designed the animals. All of our animals are cared for this way. If you’re interested in visiting to see first-hand how we care for our animals, we offer tours and are happy to show you our farm by appointment.
