You would think that as a small farm in a suburban development, deer are not a problem. But they are, although sometimes nature has a way of evening this up. Below are 3 sequential photos of the same 3 tomato plants taken on June 5 (eaten plants), June 13 (recovering plants) and June 26 (plants almost ready to fruit). As part of the nightshade family, tomato foliage will cause digestive issues in many animals though deer are resistant to these effects. If it was one deer which based on hoof prints, it seem to be, this can still cause mild issues. In any case the plants recovered though they are 1-2 weeks behind others in the row.

As a sustainable farm, I do not use any synthetic pesticide. What that means is that I am reliant on beneficial animals to control pests. An example of such a "beneficial" are many arachnids such as the wolf spider with her egg sack shown in the photo I took on my farm earlier this week. Although an opportunistic predator that will eat both pest and other beneficials, I try to ensure that I do not kill any of these on my farm. BTW she is on my hand trowel.

Attempting to harden spring seedlings by placing them outdoors for a few days in a semi-sheltered environment that gets only morning and evening sun. These were started in my basement as I do not have a greenhouse or even a large hoophouse. I will plant these cauliflower, beets and lettuce tomorrow and hope for no damping off.

I am late getting my stiffneck garlic into the ground this year. Really, it should have been completed by late November in our Zone 7b climate. However, I took advantage of the slightly warmer conditions in late December to get one bed+ of German Red garlic that I hope to harvest as green garlic in late Spring.
The photos, show the seed garlic after a 15 minute isopropyl alcohol soak, the bed before and after planting. I use sterile ornamental grass as a thin layer of mulch. This has worked well for me in the past as our winters are fairly mild.
