Every Wisconsin Supper Club is unique, and yet you know what to expect when you visit. Its beginnings are far from the Midwest, but it’s easy to see why Wisconsin claims supper club supremacy. Wisconsin’s supper clubs started as roadhouses, resorts and dancehalls where fried chicken and perch were served along with a b**r. Eventually these places transformed their food and decor, and as a result, the classic menu we know and love came into being: Friday fish fry, Saturday prime rib, Sunday broasted chicken and ribs. Plus relish trays, cheese and crackers at the bar and the undisputed cocktail: a hand-muddled brandy old fashioned. But it’s not only the food that draws people back. Plenty of nostalgia is served up with each visit: memories of dressing up for dinner and having your first kiddie cocktail, or going to a high school prom, a graduation, an anniversary or a birthday. It also helps that every supper club is steeped in history, with stories of misfortune, serendipity and mischievous ghosts. It’s fun to imagine that the walls could talk or to go back in time when lobster was a couple bucks and drinks were a quarter. This type of restaurant feeds the soul like no other, and we’re fortunate to have many exceptional supper clubs scattered around the state.

Spent a sunny, summer-y October afternoon at MARS RESORT yesterday with my friend Joe Hausch. With temps in the mid-70s it was a perfect day to sit by Lake Como with a few brandy old fashioneds, a fish fry, some onion rings and a fine shrimp cocktail. We met some ladies from Houston who were also enjoying some lakeside Wisconsin Supper Club magic. Warm memories of this wonderful day will last long into the future. ☀️

Friday, September 18th was National Cheeseburger Day and where better to enjoy one and meet up with Hamburger America's George Motz, but Wedl's Hamburger Stand in Jefferson, Wisconsin. I first met George in 2012 when he featured my fish fry documentary, Fish Fry Night Milwaukee, in his Food Film Festival in Chicago. A fish fry from Hooligans Milwaukee was served during the screening. So after all this time, it was great to catch up with George at Wedl's while he was doing a book signing, and of course have some double cheeseburgers afterwards (plus plenty of their delicious pickles). 🍔🍔🍔

Such terrible news! I got to meet Forrestt when I revisited 3 Three Mile House in July of 2022 for Wisconsin Supper Clubs: Second Edition. He was really nice, down to earth, and made some wonderful food. RIP

It is with heavy hearts that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our head chef, Forrestt Clark.

Forrestt was so much more than the person behind the kitchen at the Three Mile House. He was a dear friend and someone who brought his talent, personality, and passion for food for all to enjoy.

Right now, our hearts are with Forrestt’s family, friends, coworkers, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest easy, Forrestt. ❤️
