Hate calling the plumber?

As the weather gets colder, take a minute to remove any hoses from your outdoor spigots — even if they’re the frost-proof kind. A simple step like that can prevent frozen pipes, split fittings, and costly water damage later on.

Stay ahead of winter — save yourself the plumbing call.

What’s your water doing to your home?

We pulled this anode rod from a 1-year old water heater right in Delano.

The water coming into your home doesn’t just affect your water heater. It can also take a toll on dishwashers, washing machines, ice makers, and even plumbing fixtures. Minerals, sediment, and other dissolved elements in the water can build up or cause corrosion, shortening the lifespan of these appliances.

Regular inspections help extend the life of your water heater and give you a clearer picture of your home’s overall water quality. If it’s been years since yours was checked, it might be time to take a closer look.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Plumber in Minneapolis
When a plumbing issue pops up, the instinct is often to find someone fast. But rushing into a service call without asking a few key questions can lead to bigger problems down the road—especially in a market like Minneapolis, where older homes, freezing winters, and city permitting all add extra layers of complexity.

Whether you’re dealing with a leaking water heater, a sump pump concern, or planning a remodel, here are the top questions you should ask before hiring a plumber in the Twin Cities metro area.

1. Are You Licensed and Insured in Minnesota?
This should always be your first question. In Minnesota, plumbing work must be performed by a licensed contractor. Hiring an unlicensed plumber could mean code violations, failed inspections, and costly redos.

✅ Why it matters:
A licensed plumber is trained, tested, and required to follow the Minnesota Plumbing Code. Insurance adds another layer of protection for you as the homeowner.

2. Do You Handle City Permits and Inspections?
In Minneapolis and surrounding cities like Edina, St. Louis Park, and Golden Valley, many plumbing jobs—especially water heaters, gas lines, and repipes—require a permit and inspection.

✅ Why it matters:
A trustworthy plumber will not only pull the proper permits but will coordinate with the city to ensure the job is inspected and approved. If they avoid permits, it’s a red flag.

3. Who Will Actually Be Doing the Work?
Some companies send out sales reps to bid the job, then subcontract the work to someone else. Make sure you know who will show up—and who will be responsible.

✅ Why it matters:
You want someone accountable, clean, and qualified in your home—not just whoever was available that day.

4. What Are Your Payment Terms?
Get clarity on how and when payments are expected. For example, at Predictable Plumbing, we structure payments around project milestones—not upfront lump sums—so expectations stay clear.

✅ Why it matters:
Transparent billing protects both parties and prevents surprise charges halfway through the job.

5. Can You Provide Local References or Reviews?
A great plumber should be able to point you toward recent work or satisfied customers nearby. Also, check Google reviews, Nextdoor recommendations, and even city-specific forums.

✅ Why it matters:
You're not just hiring for plumbing skill—you’re hiring for reliability, communication, and trustworthiness.

6. Do You Specialize in Residential Work?
Commercial plumbing and new construction are very different from residential service. Look for someone who works with homeowners like you every day, especially in older Twin Cities homes.

✅ Why it matters:
Experienced residential plumbers understand the quirks of aging plumbing systems and how to work cleanly in a finished home.

7. Do You Offer a Warranty on Labor and Materials?
Ask if the plumber backs up their work. Warranties on labor and the products they install (like water heaters or sump pumps) show confidence in their craftsmanship.

✅ Why it matters:
If something goes wrong after the job, you don’t want to be left footing the bill again.

Final Thoughts
Plumbing isn’t just about fixing pipes—it’s about protecting your home, your comfort, and your peace of mind. Asking the right questions helps you avoid stress, save money, and build a relationship with a plumber you can trust long-term.

At Predictable Plumbing, we believe in transparency, clean work, and doing it right the first time. If you're looking for a reliable residential plumber in Minneapolis, Edina, Golden Valley, or nearby, we’re happy to answer any of these questions (and more).

Don’t Ignore That Drip: How Leaky Fixtures Waste Water and Money in the Twin Cities

A dripping faucet or running toilet might seem small, but in Minneapolis and the western suburbs, these leaks can cost homeowners hundreds of dollars each year.

A leaky faucet can waste over 7,000 gallons annually—around $90–$100 in added water and sewer costs. A running toilet is worse, sometimes wasting 200+ gallons per day, which can add $800 or more per year to your utility bills.

Most homes in the metro rely on groundwater, which is being used faster than it can refill. Fixing leaks not only saves money—it helps protect our region’s water supply.

Want to check for leaks at home? Turn off all faucets and watch your water meter. If it moves, you may have a hidden leak. For toilets, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If it appears in the bowl without flushing, the flapper is leaking.

Most leak repairs are quick and affordable, like replacing a flapper or a faucet washer. Catching them early prevents water damage, mold, and wasted money.

At Predictable Plumbing, we help homeowners throughout Minneapolis, Plymouth, Minnetonka, and nearby suburbs stop leaks before they become major issues. No pressure—just reliable, local service.

How to Flush Your Tank Water Heater (Minneapolis Homeowners Guide)

Hard water in the Twin Cities causes mineral buildup inside your water heater. Over time, this sediment reduces efficiency, shortens lifespan, and causes rumbling noises. Flushing your tank once a year helps prevent these issues.

What You’ll Need:

Garden hose

Flat-head screwdriver

Bucket and towels

Access to a drain or outside

How to Flush:

Turn off power or gas to the water heater.

Shut off the cold water valve above the tank.

Open a hot water tap in the home to relieve pressure.

Attach a hose to the drain valve and run it to a safe drain.

Open the drain valve to empty the tank.

Briefly turn the cold water on and off to stir and flush out sediment.

Once clear, close the valve and refill the tank.

Turn the power or gas back on and check for normal operation.

When to Call a Plumber:
If the tank won’t drain, the valve is clogged, or this is your first time flushing a water heater, call a licensed plumber.

At Predictable Plumbing, we offer flat-rate water heater maintenance in Minnetonka, Plymouth, St. Louis Park, Wayzata, and nearby suburbs.

PAYING TOO MUCH TO HEAT YOUR WATER?

Most homeowners don’t realize how much their old water heater is costing them—until the bills pile up.

A heat pump water heater is a smarter, more efficient option that can:

Use up to 65% less energy

Cut your utility bill every month

Qualify for thousands in rebates

Run quietly and last longer

If your water heater is 10+ years old, it’s probably time for an upgrade. And with rebates available, the out-of-pocket cost is often lower than you’d think.

Got a Navien (or any brand) Tankless Water Heater? It’s Time for Your Annual Descale

If your Navien hasn’t been flushed in the last 12 months, it’s quietly losing efficiency — and building up scale that can wreck the system.

Here’s what we’re seeing locally:

⚠️ Longer waits for hot water

⚠️ Decreased pressure

⚠️ Higher gas bills

⚠️ Units shutting down due to internal buildup

Navien recommends a full descale every year.
But most homeowners forget — until it’s too late.

✅ We’re NSS-Certified for Navien Service
As an NSS (Navien Service Specialist) certified provider, we do it by the book:
Full system descale
Flush and flow test
Performance inspection
Flat, honest pricing
Fast, mess-free service
