DID YOU KNOW?
You might see smoke coming from manholes—and it’s nothing to worry about.

MAWSS regularly conducts smoke testing to check for cracks or problems in the sanitary sewer system. It’s a safe, non-toxic process that helps us find issues before they become big problems.

Look for posted signs in your neighborhood ahead of testing. And don’t worry—the “smoke” isn’t harmful.

MAWSS will conduct routine fire hydrant flushing during September in several areas of West Mobile.

Customers may see crews flushing hydrants in neighborhoods and areas along or near:
Moffett Road
Overlook Road
Howells Ferry Road
Cody Road North
Old Shell Road
Areas north of Moffett Road toward Bear Fork Road

Customers may notice temporary discoloration or lower water pressure during flushing. This is normal and not harmful. If needed, simply run cold water until it clears. Thank you for your patience as we work to keep your water system safe and reliable.

Back-to-school shopping means wipes are finding their way into backpacks... but they should never end up in the toilet.

Remember, toilets are not trashcans.

Toilets aren't built to handle wipes, paper towels, floss, grease, or hygiene products. Even wipes labeled "flushable" can clog pipes and contribute to costly sewer backups. Help protect your plumbing and our wastewater system by putting these items in the trash, not the toilet.
