We don't always know what the road ahead will look like.
But God is already there so trust Him with the next step today!

“I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them...” Isaiah 42:16

It is three in the morning and there are two women in that room who are not kin to the sick woman in the bed. One is awake and one is asleep on the floor waiting her turn. Nobody sent for them and nobody is paying them. 🕯️

Sitting up was one of the strongest obligations in these mountains, and it worked like a rota that nobody ever wrote down.

When somebody in a community took seriously ill, word went along the creek, and from that night until the person recovered or died, that house was never without women in it. They came in pairs and they came in shifts. They watched through the night so the family could sleep. They kept the fire, kept water going, changed bedding, cooled fevers, dosed what there was to dose, and sat.

And they did the rest of it too. Somebody was always cooking, because a house with a sick person in it stops functioning. Somebody took the washing home. Somebody took the younger children to their own house for a week. A woman would walk in, look around, and start doing whatever she found undone without asking permission, because asking would have made it a favour and it was not a favour.

Here is what makes it more than kindness. There was no hospital within reach for most of these families, and often no doctor who could come and stay. Nursing was the entire treatment. Whether somebody lived through pneumonia or typhoid very often came down to whether there was a person awake in that room at four in the morning. 🏡

So the women of a community were, functionally, the health care system, unpaid, unlicensed, on call for life.

And it was reciprocal without ever being accounted. You sat up for them because they would sit up for you, and everybody knew that without a word.

Somebody sat up with your great grandmother. There is no record of her name anywhere.

We’re back with another creature that makes you wonder what in the world is going on. Meet the Argentine black-and-white tegu!

This giant lizard is native to South America, but it has made its way to Georgia. They can grow up to FOUR FEET LONG. That's not a lizard. That's a small dinosaur with a gym membership.

They're black and white, covered in speckles and bands, with sharp claws, powerful jaws, and a tail that can pack a serious punch if they feel threatened.

And they're not exactly picky eaters. Tegus eat eggs from quail and turkeys, along with the eggs of other reptiles, including alligators and gopher tortoises. That's a problem for our native wildlife, through no fault of their own. These lizards didn't ask to be here. They were introduced to an environment where they don't belong, and now they're just trying to survive.

Georgia's known wild population is in Toombs and Tattnall counties in South Georgia, where DNR is working to control their numbers. Sightings have also been reported elsewhere in the state.

If you spot one, DO NOT try to catch it! Take a photo from a safe distance, note where you saw it, and report it to Georgia DNR at 478-994-1438 or [email protected]. Include a photo if possible.

It's not that we don't trust you… but we'll just quickly reference the pigeon story. 👀

PLEASE don't release exotic pets, or ANY pets, into the wild! Releasing non-native species into an environment where they don't belong can have serious consequences for our native wildlife.

Stay wild, Georgia. But maybe a little LESS wild.
Because these things look like there's been a breach in Jurassic Park. 🦖
