🏇The last ride

It always feels like a betrayal somehow, that last ride before they go to their new home.

They come to me in the field, inquisitive and welcoming as ever, not knowing that this is the final time they'll greet me. I bring them to the saddling area and don't bother to tie them up. They lift all four feet obligingly and barely flick an ear as I swing the saddle on, forgiving as ever when the cinch gets scrunched up underneath.
I climb on to the mounting block, hold up my right hand and they line up for me to mount, as they've learned so well and done so many times before. They stand like a rock while I fiddle with my stirrups and check the cinch one more time and when I give a light squeeze with my legs, they stride out confidently without a backward glance; and so we begin our last ride.

The truck can't make it across our vast wilderness with its vertical slopes and barely discernable tracks; so I ride them to the nearest intersection around 10km away so they can be collected. They march out into the hills, not knowing where we're headed but knowing it'll be fun, like the hundred other times we've done this. We trot for a couple of kilometres to give ourselves a head start. As we come past the lake and the ground softens, they suggest they'd like to go a little quicker- only if it's OK, of course. On a normal day I'd continue riding trot and deny that request: "Not right now- you need to maintain this rhythm and stretch over your back a little more first". But today is not a normal day- it's our last ride! So I throw caution to to the wind, make a kiss noise and they gleefully pop into a rolling canter. I sit easy in the saddle, one handed with loose reins flapping and think they're enjoying this as much as I am. I come out of my seat a little and squeeze with my legs lightly: "We can go faster? Really?!" They say, flicking an ear back. "Why not?" I chide. They need no further prompting and their bodies flatten, streamlined against the mountain breeze, and as we fly ever faster, the countryside we know so well becomes a blur.

Eventually we come back to a walk and they take a drink from a shallow stream, depleted by the relentless hot summer. After some refreshment we canter on through some Cork forests until we reach a road. "That's not the way 🤔" their faltering steps and uncertain ears say. "I know" I say, like it's the most natural thing in the world. "Oh well🤷‍♀️" They shrug, then walk onto the road for me despite their reservations. "You're such a good horse." I tell them, rubbing their lightly sweated up necks as cars speed past us. They don't like it, but they tolerate it; I told them cars are OK and they trust me, so they do it.

We reach the pick up spot and I sit for a moment. They gave me the ride of my life, and yet here I am about to load them on to a truck, never to see them again. I HOPE to never see them again, because to see them would mean they're in trouble. It would mean they've once again been labeled "dangerous", "unpredictable" or "disrespectful". I let them go because I believe they can all be somebody's horse of a lifetime, with a human whose skills and personality are compatible. If I kept them all, I'd never be able to help any other hopeless cases find their heart humans.

And so the truck rolls up and the moment has come. We two stand at the bottom of the ramp, this one last thing to do together. They sniff the ramp cautiously "how do I know it's OK?". I walk on first "when has anything I ever asked you not been ok?". They take a few seconds, a choice between the last Alentejo ground they'll ever stand on, and the first person in their life who made any sense. "True!" They walk right on up and I tie them to the ring. I give them a last scratch and say "send me a postcard from The Algarve/France/Germany/England. Go be happy now!". I walk back down the ramp with tears threatening to spill and I don't look back. And so, our journey together is complete. Their last ride as a reformed 'problem horse' and the first chapter of their lives as a loved and cherished heart horse.

When you’re supposed to fit in a pony sized sheet but your belly didn’t get the memo…

Miss Reba enjoying some play time in the indoor while she dries off. With temps dropping it’s important to make sure your horses are comfortable in this rain!

I started in the jumper world and sadly a lot of trainers I was around were proud of the fact that their horse was more scared of them than the jump. That mindset had become normalized to me.

I was just a teenager and one day a woman, an amateur who I thought was quite talented, told me that my horse really liked me and it showed.

I said to her “wow thanks, that’s a really awesome compliment”

She’s very dryly but very sincerely said, “Yes. Yes it is.”

I decided that that was the complement I wanted to always receive and it changed my mindset about a lot of things. It wasn’t a piece of advice per se, but it was a single sentence that really changed the trajectory of what I thought good riding was.

It’s also a compliment that I try to give out whenever it is true.

With show season coming to an end we have a selection of our school horses available for partial and half lease. All leases are on farm and require that you take a weekly lesson with the on-site trainer. Please send us a message for lease terms and rates!

Maggie is an 11 year old 15.3h OTTB mare best suited for an intermediate to advanced rider as she can be forward at times. Maggie has 3 lovely gates, is a dream to jump and absolutely LOVES trail rides. No buck, no rear and honestly and absolutely sweetheart. If you’re not a fan of mares, Maggie will change your mind. Although she’s not a hot tempered horse, she needs a confident rider as she’s a little on the insecure side. As long as her rider is confident, so is she! Maggie has all the finesse and fancy moves to take someone very far in the show ring. Spend your winter getting to know her and then take on show season!

Danny is an 18 year old 14H Morab gelding that’s worth his weight in gold. Danny is beginner safe but has enough pizazz for even the most advanced riders. Danny is always in the ribbons at shows! He’s a professional in the arena and can cart even the most beginner riders around a course happily. There’s no horse more safe and reliable than Danny is, whether you’re a beginner rider looking to get more serious saddle time or you’re ready to slow down and you’re looking for something to bump around the ring casually, Danny is your dude.

Lacey is an 18 year old 15.1h grade paint mare available for trail lease. Lacey is as lovely as they come. 3 smooth gaits, an incredible jumper, and always willing to try something new. As professional as she is in the arena, she’s looking for a leaser to just take it easy with her out on the trail. If you want someone reliable to adventure out into the woods with before the snow gets here, reach out to us about Lacey.

Darla is a 10 year old 15.2h Warmblood mare that’s starting to get back into shape after some time off from arena work. She has 3 lovely gates, is starting over fences, loves to go out on the trails and is just a super fancy girl! Darla has a truly impressive work ethic, I’ve seldom worked with a mare that’s so willing to try anything that I throw her way. Darla is best suited for an intermediate to advanced rider as she’s a big, forward mare with a large stride. Although we’re still getting to know Darla, there’s no doubt that she’ll be a huge success in the show ring next season. Don’t miss your chance to become her new partner!!

Baxter is an 11 year old 14.1h QHx gelding that’s as sassy as sassy can be. If you’re a fan of mares, you’ll just love this gelding. Baxter is best for an advanced beginner and up - no buck, no rear, no bolt, but plenty of opinions and he’ll definitely test you to see what he can get away with. Typical pony! Although Baxter can be challenging, he’s very competitive and is a confidence builder in the show ring. 3 smooth, fun gates, LOVES to jump and will go out on the trails alone. Baxter is a barn favorite because he’s just so stinkin’ cute!

Mares > anything
07/29/2022

Mares > anything

Mares aren’t always well liked and for the same reasons strong women aren’t.

Opinionated? Those opinions are not without good cause and maybe you can't figure them out or maybe you just don’t like her opinion of you. Change it and she will always be on your side.

Stubborn? She just won’t let you bulldoze her. Treat her with respect and her resilience will be an asset to you.

Difficult? You just can’t handle her. You don’t have what it takes.

Stick with geldings then, and leave the mare for someone who understands her and appreciates the same qualities society has subtlety taught you not to like.

Here’s to mares, to strong women, and to those who CAN and DO appreciate them!

Available for on farm lease

Baxter is a 14.1HH QHx gelding with plenty of sass. He’s safe enough for a beginner rider but has enough spunk to satisfy even the most advanced riders. Baxter is just plain FUN to ride. He has buttery smooth gates, auto changes, an eye for his distances, and takes care of you over fences. Baxxie is a proven show horse, a great confidence builder, will go out alone on trails, cool as a cucumber at the beach and just the sweetest boy.

Available for half or partial lease on farm lease only, farm has an indoor and outdoor ring as well as trail access. Leasers must take a weekly lesson with onsite trailer, located in Wales. Message us for more information or to set up a lesson with Baxter!

Available for on farm lease only

Maggie is an 11 year old 15.3hh OTTB mare being offered for half or partial on farm lease. Maggie is as athletic as they come with a work ethic to match. No buck, no rear, no attitude, no spook. Safe enough for an advanced beginner but athletic enough to take an advanced rider anywhere they want to go. Aside from her work ethic, Maggie is the sweetest mare I’ve ever come across. She’ll come right to you in the pasture and is happy to just hang out with you in the field. Maggie is an excellent jumper, very fancy footwork for the dressage ring, and loves to relax and hang low on trails.

Located in Wales message for more information and leasing rates. Not for sale, not for off farm lease. The farm where she is located has an indoor and outdoor arena as well as trail access. All leasers must take weekly lessons with the on-site trainer.
