Basil-You can regrow basil by putting the basil stems with leaf nodes in a glass of water and placing them in a sunny spot. Wait for the roots to grow about 2 inches long and then transfer them in pots.

Romaine lettuce-You can regrow romaine lettuce from the bottom of the stump. Just put the romaine lettuce stumps in half inch of water for a few days. Refill water if the water level is below half inch. When new leaves start to regrow, you can transfer and plant them in soil.

Garlic-You can regrow garlic sprouts from a single garlic clove. Just place the sprouted garlic cloves in a glass with little water and wait for the shoots to grow taller. Alternatively, you can plant garlic cloves directly in the soil.

Celery-You can regrow celery by cutting off the base of the celery and placing it in a bowl of warm water in a sunny spot. The new leaves in the middle of the base will begin to grow and thicken in 5 to 7 days. Then you can transfer it to a pot with soil.

Ginger-You can regrow ginger by soaking ginger chunks overnight in water and then transferring them in a pot with soil in a warm and sunny place.

Sweet Potato-You can regrow sweet potato by placing it in a jar of water in direct sunlight and letting it sprout. Then plant the well-rooted sprouts in soil.

It’s October and Fall is here! At this time of year, plants are beginning to enter their winter dormancy period. October is also the month for sowing and planting crops that don’t mind the winter cold: broad beans, spring cabbages, garlic, onion sets, root vegetables, broccoli, leafy greens like kale, chard, spinach lettuce, and rhubarb. If you have a small greenhouse or any other form of season extension you can also push your summer crops a little further.

🌱 It’s September—and it’s STILL not too late to grow your own food!

Here in Zone 8b, we're transitioning into one of the best times of the year for gardening. 🍂 While the summer garden may be slowing down, the fall garden is just getting started!

Now is a great time to start growing cool-season favorites like:

🥬 Kale & collards
🌿 Mustard greens & arugula
🥕 Carrots & beets
🌱 Radishes & turnips
🥬 Lettuce and more!

You don't need a huge backyard to grow food, either. A few containers, a small raised bed, or a sunny space can be enough to get started.

Growing your own food means fresher meals, fewer trips to the store, more control over what goes into your food, and the satisfaction of harvesting something you grew yourself.

September is here. The seasons are changing. 🌱

You still have time. Let's get growing!

You know those black milk crates that seem to be everywhere? Before you toss one aside, turn it into a mini fall garden!

Line the crate, add some good soil, and you've got a surprisingly useful container for growing things like:

🥬 Kale
🌱 Collards
🌿 Mustard greens
🥕 Radishes
🌿 Herbs
🥬 Lettuce & other leafy greens

Perfect for porches, patios, balconies, or anyone working with limited space.

Now here's the challenge: Take a milk crate and turn it into something you can eat! 🧺➡️🌱➡️🥗

Planning Your Fall Garden: Key Points to Consider 🍂

When preparing for your fall garden, one crucial factor to keep in mind is "days to maturity." This refers to the time it takes for a plant to grow and produce a harvest. As the weather cools down, most fall crops can handle light frosts, but for some plants sensitive to the cold, it's vital to ensure they have enough time to mature before the first frost.

Here are some examples of days to maturity for popular fall crops in Zone 8b (Northeast LA):

Radishes: Approx. 21-30 days
Beans: Approx. 40-50 days
Kale: Approx. 50-60 days
Peppers: Approx. 70-80 days
Corn: Approx. 70-80 days
Watermelons: Approx. 90-100 days
In Zone 8b, the first frost usually arrives around Nov. 30. To determine if a crop (that dislikes cold temperatures) is worth planting, count back from Nov. 30 to see if it has enough days to mature and produce a harvest.🌱🍅🌿

Drinking “okra water” is a popular new method of using okra. Some have even suggested that drinking it helps lessen diabetes symptoms. The drink is made by putting okra pods in water and soaking them overnight. Some of the valuable nutrients in the skin and seed pods will be absorbed into the water. If you’re not crazy about the taste of okra, drinking this okra water solution is a quick and simple way to derive the benefits of okra without eating it.
Some people prefer to cut the okra into thin slices instead of soaking the pods whole. If you are going to prepare okra water this way, be prepared for a drink that is slightly bitter. (As always do your own research) let's get growing 🌱
