There are certain things that simply taste like summer in Michigan, and strawberries are at the top of the list.

June means ruby-red berries warmed by sunshine, roadside farm stands, stained fingertips, homemade shortcakes, and the annual realization that store-bought strawberries just don't compare.

At Gather & Grow, we're celebrating the official kickoff of Michigan berry season with one of our newest treats: Strawberry Lemon Mason Jar Creamery! Bright strawberries, sunny lemon, and old-fashioned ice cream memories all tucked into one little jar.

Yesterday we taste-tested our new Strawberry Lemon Mason Jar Creamery at the Trenton Farmers Market, and it was a hit! We were only sampling, though, so a few folks left a little disappointed they couldn’t take any home.

One thing became very clear to this little magic packet maker: Michigan REALLY loves maple. And honestly? We get it.

So let’s celebrate ice cream season the Gather & Grow way!

There’s something about being “beside someone” in the kitchen that stays with you forever.

When I was little, Grandma Dayton was my person. We made ceramics and wood crafts, but mostly, we cooked. I can still remember moving Salisbury steak around the skillet while she stood beside me, mashing potatoes together, making chocolates at Christmas, and learning how to perfect Grandpa’s toast just the way he liked it.

I don’t remember every recipe.
I remember the feeling.

The warmth of the kitchen.
The comfort of being included.
The quiet confidence that came from someone saying, “Here, let me show you.”

Grandma passed away when I was in 8th grade, but I still think about those moments often…and smile.

At Gather & Grow, I think that’s part of what food really is. Not just nourishment, but memory-making. Tiny ordinary moments that become part of someone’s story forever. ❤️
