A little bit of this weekend's CSA harvest!

What you see here is the bolted stems of the mustard mix that I grew this year. It was a mix of seven different mustards. The more delicate and heat intolerant mustards will bolt first, and that's what these are! I left these mustards in the bed to bolt until the seed pods are full, I then pluck them from the ground and trim off the root ends.They will be bundled and hung to dry for several weeks before I can thrash the pods open. If I had to guess I would expect at least a thousand-fold return on a single 4 oz package "300-400" of mustard mix from FEDCO seeds. The mustards that haven't bolted are the hardier varieties and now have more room to grow and provide harvests for weeks to come! For reference, I counted seeds in one individual pod, and it was around 20 seeds. Seed saving math can get crazy! But this is how you would basically have seeds for the rest of your life. Harvesting plants for seeds, and seed saving in general is just as important as growing these plants for food!

Tomorrow's CSA share! Curly blue kale, baby kale mix, mustard mix, radish bunches, red scallions, zucchini and squash! Every member will receive a bonus item this week from veg that is currently starting to put on fruit! It will either be sungold tomatoes, cucumbers, okra/ peppers, sweet peas, or extra radish!

So much squash on the horizon! A selection of three different yellows including my favorite zephyr, zucchini, and summer squash are all starting to explode in growth!

White goose foot, otherwise known as Lamb's quarters, or wild spinach! Often considered a w**d, this is an amazing wild growing edible that thrives in Disturbed soils. It's one of my favorite greens, and it tastes very similar to spinach, with a slightly nutty flavor. I have a lot of it growing on the property currently and I'm letting it go wild, saving the seeds for next season to grow even more. If you would like some I would be happy to share!
