We are doing meetups this morning at Putnam Farm and Home, so stop by and say “hi” if you are out and about.

I do have extra birds with me if anyone needs some. Rough guess of the “extras” right now:

-About 14 Jumbo Browns, 6-8 weeks old (5 or 6 different “lines”
-About 20 JB’s, 3-4 weeks old, (mainly 3 different lines)
-About 12-15 JB’s, 4-5 days old (4-5 different lines)

-About a dozen Tibetans (dark brown), 6-8 weeks old
-A few Tibetans, tux’s, and Fees in the 3-4 week bin
-Also a few assorted tux, Fee, Andalusian, etc in the hatchling bin.

Hey! 👋 We are still here and are VERY active here on the farm even though we haven’t been very active on socials! Life has thrown us multiple curve balls over the last 8-10 months…actually it’s been more like ‘multiple double-leg-takedowns’, but more about that later.

I did take advantage of the beautiful weather yesterday afternoon to take a quick video or two of some of our recent grow outs to share with you. I love how curious and talkative these little birds are when you interact with them (sound on 🔊).

I’m also very pleased with the weights of some of our jumbo brown growouts. These are already 13.4/14.2 oz (hens) and 10.8 (roo) at 8 weeks. There are some chunky gals in there, and at least a couple of really chunky Roos. I’ll be weighing the entire group today and making some selections on ones to keep.

Enjoy the videos, and make sure you have your sound on! 🔊
Stay tuned for more chick pics…..

Just a not-so-quick update of what I’ve been working on for the last few months (years, actually 😅). I’m loving these colors! I’ve been not-so-patiently waiting for a slightly cloudy day to take pics and video, so here ya go…..!

I’ll put the boring details, along with a few pics, below. 😉

Quick edit….these are from a grow-out pen and are 3-7 weeks old (6-7 week old Roos have been pulled out already)

Whew! It has been one doozy of a school year and I’m so glad it’s (mostly) over! 😰😅 We got our school year off to a bad start and it set the tone for a whirlwind of crazy and frazzled ten months that followed. A few infrastructure disasters in the middle of winter that really tested my resolve, not to mention my record-keeping, and we almost completely missed spring chick season. 🐣🤦🏼‍♀️😪

For me, this summer will be a time for relaxation, reflection, regrouping, and (low-stress) expansion projects.

On the bright side, I finally have a big, jumbo hen laying great big greenish-blue eggs. She’s been throwing some great big birds. These two ⬇️⬇️ are probably my favorites so far. They are from different hatches, but are full siblings.

(Left one is a rooster. He’s super sweet and normally doesn’t appear as ‘fluffy’ as he is in that pic. He is 11-12oz, so his is a nice-sized boy. I just put him in a pen with his own ladies last week…a group of Andalusians. I saw him successfully do his ‘business’ yesterday; he’s FINALLY figured it out! 😅

Right one is a hen. She’s really laid back and likes to talk. She’s a little over 14oz.)

I can’t wait to see what they produce! 🤩

For biosecurity reasons (and our sanity 😅), we do not allow farm visits. If you’ve wanted to check out our birds in person, you can do so at the Middle TN poultry/bird/rabbit swap tomorrow in Alexandria from 9am-2pm(?). I’ll be there, set up with lots (and lots) of birds. I do not have an updated inventory list (yet), but it’ll be somewhere in the neighborhood of the following:
100-ish hatchlings (1-3 days old)
50-60 that are in the 2-3 week old range
35-40 in the 5 week old range
And after those are loaded up, then I’ll load up as many of the excess adults that I can fit in my SUV. I didn’t quite get the timing right on hatching/growing out my next generation of breeding stock and I have waaaayyyyyyyy too many and I’ve been so busy with the kids’ schedules that I haven’t been actively finding new homes for them. I have about 40 or so ‘extras’ (it’s probably more like 80, but who’s counting?).
See you there!

After giving 24-30 hours to finish hatching and drying, it’s time to take them out of the incubator and plop them into their nice warm brooder. I learned the hard way to always open the hatching basket only if it’s inside another receptacle. Those chicks are faster than you think! 🐥 💨

It’s hatch day!!! 🐥🐣🥳 As you can see, I’m way more excited than I should be about that! 😅

I love 🥰 my Hatching Time cabinet incubators, but I really wish they’d totally revamp these tiny, blurry viewing “portals”. I really think the bottom of an all-glass CocaCola bottle would be better than this! 😤

In the main tray that you are looking at, these are my jumbo browns. They are averaging over 10oz before 6 weeks, so we are processing extra males for freezer camp around 7-ish weeks. No need to feed them any longer than that as there isn’t a lot of extra growth remaining (for the males anyway). This cuts down on the feed costs, daily maintenance 💩, and my husband’s grumbling about all of them finding their crow….which seems to be all at once, at 3 am, and everyone else must join in chorus. 😳😴😑🥱

Not shown, extended browns, standard Pearl celadons, and project birds. My standard celadons always hatch one day later. 🤷🏼‍♀️😒
