🐝 Did you know winter honey bees are different from summer bees? As October rolls around, our colonies are preparing for an entirely different season. 💛🍂

The hardest part of fall beekeeping? Leaving my girls alone! 🍂🐝 I know they need their hives sealed up tight for cooler weather, but y'all… I MISS THEM! 😂❤️

🐝☀️ Did you know honey bees use the sun to navigate?

Even on cloudy days, they can use patterns of polarized light to help find their way home!

Nature never stops amazing me. 💛

🐝 The part of beekeeping I absolutely DREAD! 😩

VARROA MITES! 🤬

These tiny parasites are one of the biggest threats to honey bees. They feed on bees' fat body tissue, spread dangerous viruses, and can eventually cause an entire colony to collapse.

The scary part? A colony can look perfectly healthy, but that's why we test!

Unfortunately, the test kills the sampled bees, which is exactly why I HATE doing it. 😩

Eviction day at the hive! 🐝💀

This little lady was NOT playing around!

Watch closely and you can actually see her shaking and vibrating as she wrestles a drone out of the hive.

And when the job is done? She takes a minute to collect herself, cleans up, climbs a blade of grass, and heads right back to work. 😂

Nature is absolutely fascinating!

🔥 Can't keep your bee smoker lit?

Here's how I get mine going and keep it smoking throughout my hive inspections! 🐝

A little dry pine straw, a couple of smoker pellets, and one important tip that makes all the difference!

What's your favorite smoker fuel?

She remembered. 🥹🐝

“Do you remember what this white cloth is for?”
“Yeah… for those bugs that are black”
😂 Those “little black bugs” are small hive beetles — and apparently my little beekeeper has been paying attention. ❤️
