The honey isn’t the only thing worth saving. 🐝🍯

After extracting honey, I save all those beautiful wax cappings and process them down into clean beeswax.

And beeswax can be used for SO many things! Everything from lip balm and candles to wax wraps ... even re-waxing your own frames for the bees to use again. 🐝
That last one is exactly what I plan to do with this batch, which is why I left it as one big sheet instead of pouring it into smaller molds. I’ll melt it again later and use it to add fresh beeswax back onto my frames.
There are so many things you can do with beeswax. It’s one of the beautiful parts of beekeeping ... the wax itself is incredibly valuable, sometimes just as much as the honey. ❤️

From the honey to the wax, very little has to go to waste.

Robbing or orientation flights? 🐝👀
A whole bunch of bees flying around the front of a hive can look alarming, but it doesn't necessarily mean your hive is being robbed.
Orientation flights tend to be more organized around the entrance as bees learn the location of their hive and surroundings.
Robbing? That's usually a whole different kind of chaos. 😳

My quick way of describing it:
Big 8 ➡️ orientation
Big mess ➡️ start looking closer 😂

🐝 What’s blooming in YOUR neighborhood?

This is what my honey bees have available within about ONE MILE of my hives right now. 🌻

Sunflowers are blooming, acres of cotton are beginning to flower, crepe myrtles are still going strong… and that’s before we even count all the wild forage along the roadsides, fields and woods!

This is one of the reasons I always say every apiary, and every hive, is different.

I can put sugar water on a hive, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to want it. If my girls have natural nectar available and they’re bringing it home, I’m perfectly happy to let them choose the real thing. 🐝❤️

And with goldenrod and other fall forage coming soon… I’m VERY curious what this year’s fall honey is going to look like. 🍯

Beekeepers - what’s blooming where YOU are right now?

Teaching the Next Generation 🐝❤️
One of my favorite parts of beekeeping is getting to share it with my grandbaby 🥹🐝
Ry suited up with me while we checked her daddy's hive, and of course I had to show her the most important lady in the box. 👑❤️
Maybe one day she'll be the one teaching her grands how to keep beebies. 🐝

Well… apparently TWO queens wasn't just a temporary thing. 😂👑👑

Remember my Travis hive with two queens?

Well… ONE WEEK LATER and ...

THEY'RE BOTH STILL HERE. 😂

I found the new queen first, got her marked so she's a little easier to spot next time… then flipped the frame and THERE was the original queen. 🤦‍♀️

So apparently mother and daughter are still running a two-queen operation. 😂

At this point, I'm just watching to see how long they're going to keep this up. 🐝❤️

Sometimes good beekeeping is knowing when NOT to open the hive. 🐝

It's HOT. 🔥 I had a few little things to take care of and feeders to top off, but nothing that justified pulling these colonies apart just to have a look.

You can learn a lot from the outside ... weight, bottom boards, entrance activity, pollen coming in, bearding, traffic, etc without disturbing the entire colony.

Inspect when there's a reason to inspect.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for your bees is leave them alone. 🐝❤️

🐝 Apparently my bees are on a keto diet 😂

Plenty of pollen pants coming in… nectar, not so much.

But even in the same bee yard, one hive won’t touch the sugar water while another is sucking it down.

Same yard. Different hives. Read YOUR bees. 🐝❤️

There’s NO way I’m wearing a bee suit when the heat index is 106° in the shade and there’s not a cloud in the sky. 🥵🐝

My new invisible bee suit? Lavender oil. 😂 Just spray a little on my skin and get to work.

Just gotta remember to grease up BEFORE I put my gloves on. 🤦‍♀️😂

When your bees start making plans without consulting you… 👀🐝👑

Two supersedure cells, one perfectly good-looking queen — and I’m leaving this one up to the bees.

Sometimes they know something I don’t. 🤷‍♀️🐝

Found the queen… and decided she was the perfect one to test my new queen marking tool on. 👑🐝

That was easy ... I guess I love it!
