as not easy – was a positive one. When I bought the property, I was moving back “home” from Nashville and a music career, and had a vision of clearing land and having animals – especially horses – and of slowly incorporating homesteader ways that I had picked up from YouTube, the internet, and watching TV series such as “Alaska’s Last Frontier”. Well, life happened, and with the expenses of clearing land and the busy-ness of life, including my ongoing music career, the vision remained just that. When COVID-19 hit in 2020, I saw “quarantine” as a chance to not only have the time to raise animals on the land, but to provide for my family in a time where essentials – milk, eggs, fresh vegetables – were difficult to find, and trips to the store were few and far between with mandated social distancing in place. Though many food items became more readily available as the world adjusted and supply chain caught up, I realized the desire I had to move away from being dependent on grocery stores for food. Chickens came first, goats soon followed, a rescue bunny, a second dog, ducks, more chickens… you get the point. A garden MUCH larger than anything I previously had went into the ground, then a greenhouse. Fences were built, enclosures erected, land was cleared, and this little homestead quickly took shape. The opportunity to sell things – eggs, fresh milk, plants, vegetables, soaps, and handicrafts – has given my ever-entrepreneurial self a way to make a few extra dollars of income. Rhythm Ranch Homestead gets its name from our affinity for and love of music, and “Ranch” not only refers to the presence of animals, but more as a nod to the history of this land and home which was formerly “The Ranch House” – the local African-American juke joint in the 1950’s. Naming the property became a necessity when I began to register goats with the American Dairy Goat Association – they require a farm name, and I think this one fits!

We have survived on a farm for 6 years without a tractor. When we have livestock loss, we depend on other farms who generously help with burial. I carry heavy lumber on my lap while driving a riding lawnmower, and can tow small loads behind or hand-spread seed while driving it.

That riding lawnmower has made it for 10 years, but this year (and last), it has not worked more often than it has. (And our push mower is also out of commission. 😣) I have had it looked at / repaired more times than I can count. I have replaced all the tires one by one after patching more holes than I can count. At this point, we need to replace it. As long as we were in drought, the grass didn't grow much, but with the rain, it is growing faster than the goats can keep up with. 😳

I've been largely unable to work since hand surgery last October, followed by a kidney cancer diagnosis, surgery, and treatment. I will have major elbow surgery on September 2. Not the greatest timing for needing to replace a lawnmower.

I'd been considering a used UTV with a dump trailer that would allow me to continue operations after surgery, but need to pivot to looking for a used riding lawnmower or tractor that can cut grass.

If you're planning to sell any of the above - a used tractor, riding lawnmower, or Gator / UTV (or if you're a wizard at riding lawnmower repair 😆) please let me know! I'm doing my best to keep the farm above water, but life hasn't been the kindest this year!

Did you know? 🤯 When you buy our free-range eggs, you are feeding our chickens! Yup - we use the money we make selling our eggs to buy chicken feed. This keeps chicken feed coming, and keeps our flock self-sustaining even though cancer, surgeries and health issues have prevented me from working much this year!

We do our best to keep our farm afloat with sales from the products we make and grow here on the homestead, and we are so grateful for our customers who help keep us going!

Our push mower is not working, so I brought in four new lawnmowers that never break down... 🤣 🐐 It's been too hot for the dogs to spend much time in their yard, so the goats took it over and trimmed the grass for me. I don't even need to put gas in them! 🤣
