Brandt Farms Case Study - Understanding Ag

A brief background on our guest for tomorrow.

David and Kendra Brandt purchased his grandmother’s farm in 1971 after being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and serving in Vietnam. It was his grandmother’s grandfather’s farm before that.

The farm is located in Fairfield County, Ohio near the town of Carroll, OH. It currently consists of 736 acres of no-till row crops and cover crops. David also has a cover crop seed company and a seed-cleaning business that operate on the farm.

The operation now involves three generations of the family that are actively involved in the day-to-day operations, including his son and daughter-in-law and a grandson who became a partner in the farming operations in January 2020.

Join us TODAY, September 30 at 10:00 am for Mountaineer Farm Talk! the big voice of West Virginia Agriculture. This week our special guest will be Dr. Derrell Peel, the Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist for Oklahoma State to talk about adding value to feeder calves.

Fall is the traditional time to wean and sell calves. Marketing is a part of every beef cattle operation. Feeder calves are the most widely marketed animals and have traditionally been marketed using private treaty and weekly auction markets due to convenience and relatively low marketing costs.

Derrell Peel will talk about ways to add value to calves through preconditioning and cooperative marketing. Derrell has served as the Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist for Oklahoma State since 1989. His program focuses on livestock market situation and outlooks and marketing/risk management education for beef producers.

This week our special guest will be Bob Gregory from Berea Gardens to talk about “Fall Gardening and Extending the Growing Season”

A fall garden can produce a bountiful harvest. There are many ways to extend the gardening season well into early winter. Can we garden year-round here in WV? Home gardeners and commercial growers have several options when it comes to extending the vegetable gardening season and growing cool season vegetables.

Bob will share his extensive horticulture knowledge and talk about what to plant in your fall garden. Berea Farms is a family-scale market farm intended to be a model for people wanting to find food and financial security. They utilize two acres of the farm for intensive vegetable production and have 7 high tunnels to extend the growing season.

Bob is a trained agronomist, horticulturalist , crop consultant and educator, and has extensive experience in both large and small scale farming.

Mountaineer FarmTalk returns this week and it will be Oh so sweet!

Join us this Friday at 10 AM as we will be joined by Danny Townsend of the Townsend Sorghum Mill.

Sweet sorghum is primarily grown for the sweet juice that is extracted from the plant’s stalks. Stalks are crushed and the extracted juice is cooked down to a thick, sticky syrup. Kentucky leads the US in sweet sorghum production.

Townsend’s Sorghum has been produced on the same farm in Jeffersonville, Kentucky since the late 1800s. Townsend’s Sorghum is currently being produced by the fifth generation family patriarch Danny Townsend. Danny took the reins of the family business in the mid-1980s. Since that time, Townsend’s Sorghum has been instrumental in sorghum’s revival.

Many of Danny’s planting and harvesting techniques have been instrumental in bringing sorghum back from the brink of extinction. In addition, Townsend’s Pure Cane Sorghum has been voted National Champion Sweet Sorghum, not once, but twice.

On their website Townsend's sells their famous sweet sorghum, apple butter and is a source for sweet sorghum cane seed.
