Protect San Luis Valley Water

#DidYouKnow that all of our Valley’s water is connected to some extent? Two aquifers – a shallow (unconfined) and a deep (confined) aquifer – are underground “bathtubs” that collect rain and groundwater. Pumping water from the deep aquifer (as RWR has proposed) can affect the shallow aquifer and also reduce the amount of water in nearby rivers and streams. This could negatively impact the environment, including streams, rivers, fish and wildlife. #StopWaterExport https://www.protectsanluisvalleywater.com/how-we-get-our-water

Our economy, culture and community are connected to agriculture. The some 1,600 farms and ranches in the Valley are the region's economic engine. Water is the lifeblood of our community, livelihood and culture. #StopWaterExport #ProtectSLVWater

National Grazing Lands Coalition

Our lands and soil are possibly the most underappreciated resources we have, yet their conservation is vital to humanity. We need to have an important discussion on what can be done to protect the planet through proper land management. This is so much more important than most people realize. Come join the conversation.

Soil Health in the West: The San Luis Valley

Thank you to the Soil and Water Conservation Society for visiting with us and putting together this great video! This was such a neat project to be a part of. Filmed in memory of the man who did the first interview and video of Lyle and Erin together talking about soil health.

Soil health is an agricultural buzzword in states like Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Iowa, but what does soil health look like in a region less blessed by black soil…

As the mighty river rages this week, we can look back at 1911 when the worst floods hit the Rio Grande River. They came in the month of October and were caused by a rain that lasted 3 days that brought damage and loss of lives in the San Juan Mountains and the San Luis Valley; washing out bridges, roads, railroads, parts of towns and ranches and changing the course of the river. It was instrumental in changing the plans for a transcontinental route over the Continental Divide. Elwood Pass route was abandoned in favor of Wolf Creek Pass. Crews worked day and night to save the unfinished dam from washing out; the gates were wide open and water was to a foot from the top of the dam. Meadows became large lakes and as you can see in the photo below, even down river in Alamosa the came within feet of being covered and the streets of Alamosa were under water.
