While spring is the standard season for new life on a farm, last week we welcomed three new additions!

First off is Maple, an Anatolian Shepherd from Virginia, is joining the Livestock Guardian Dog pack. So far her favorite part of farm life is playing with 15 month old Sunny (also an Anatolian Shepherd) who knows just how to play with a puppy. Maple’s least favorite is easily helping to let the ducks out in the morning, they have zero personal space!

Our LGDs are dogs first and working partners second. Maple will be spending the next several months doing everything a puppy does. Potty training, basic obedience, and how to behave as a 100+ pound giant breed dog around humans. At the same time, she’ll get to practice being calm around poultry and the sheep, what is right to bark at, and how to be a team player with the pack.

Next we are excited to announce our first set of purebred Horned Dorset lambs were born the day after Maple arrived! Twins, a boy and a girl, are exactly what we’d hoped for out of our first lambing. The little ewe lamb will join the breeding flock while the ram lamb will stay on as a wether (neutered lamb) to be a companion for our ram when he can’t be with his ladies. Birth was smooth as can be (on pasture in daylight with no human intervention needed!) and after a few days in the barn to monitor health and growth, the ewe and her lambs have returned to the flock to continue grazing for the rest of the fall.

This week’s introduction is also a goodbye. It is always bittersweet to see an animal grow frail with age. You’re happy to have given them a long and full life, but the end is never easy.

Boomer was our first cat, adopted from a barn cat program back in 2016. The staff there estimated his age to be between 5 and 7 years old. At the time we just had a garden and 5 backyard chickens in suburban neighborhood. He got me over my fear of cats and quickly became a pet. Boomer travelled with us across the US and back, living life as a neighborhood pet, barn cat again, and feral kitten tamer! He was always happy to see his people and would start purring the moment you began to pet him.

Boomer, Mr. Boops, Purr Pot. You’ll be greatly missed here on the farm ❤️

Once a week I would like to share part of the farm with you all. Today being the first try, I'd like to introduce you to the heart of our Wildlife Management Program, Sage!

We use Livestock Guardian Dogs to deter predators and pests from sneaking in to make a quick meal out of animals and gardens. They work as a pack to build a territory and then hold that space. This can be through marking on the farm, barking back at the local coyotes, and even chasing off or hunting smaller things like raccoons and birds of prey! This way we disrupt our local ecosystem as little as possible.

Sage is a 6 year old Anatolian Shepherd from working lines in Maryland. She is my right hand lady as we expand from homesteaders to farmers. While many farmers treat LGDs differently from most dog breeds, we opted to raise her as a dog first and a worker second. This just means that she can move between pet dog world and working dog world with ease! My favorite example of this is with raccoons. On the farm, raccoons are often deadly to unprotected poultry, Sage knows to run them off or up trees and does so enthusiastically. But last summer on a walk along a riverbank we spotted a baby raccoon at the base of a tree all alone. Sage saw it, sniffed the air to confirm, then we went on our way. She understood that there were no chickens around to worry over so it was best to let the little guy be.

Her favorite way to spend an afternoon would be stretched out in the grass, belly up to the sun, surrounded by kids giving belly scritches.
