Our brave boy is doing so much better. ❤️🐓
Last night we were able to catch our rooster and get a good look at his injuries. We cleaned up his wounds, made sure he was as comfortable as possible, and are keeping a close eye on him.
Considering what he went through, we're amazed by his resilience. He's definitely missing some feathers and has a few battle scars, but he's alert, moving around, and recovering wonderfully!
We're incredibly thankful he survived!

Another wild day on the homestead... but also a little bit of hope. ❤️🐓
Today our rooster became the latest victim of the predator that's been targeting our animals. We found feathers everywhere after Jonathan saw the preditor standing over him, treating him like a chew toy. He was nowhere to be found after that..
After some time and reviewing the camera footage it looked like he may have survived and ran away. I went looking for him and we are so thankful, we found him! He's injured, sore, and missing plenty of feathers, but he's alive.
We also finally discovered what's been happening. The predator isn't coming from the woods—it's a dog getting underneath gaps in our front fence.
Now it's time to adapt. We'll be building raised garden beds along the fence line to block those openings while adding more space to grow food for our family.
Homesteading isn't just the beautiful sunsets and fresh eggs. It's heartbreak, problem-solving, learning, and getting back up after difficult days.
We're hopeful our brave rooster recovers, and we're hoping this is the beginning of a safer future for the rest of our flock.

Some days on the homestead are full of joy.
Some days break your heart.

This weekend, we lost nearly our entire flock to a predator. Only two of our meat chickens survived, and are holding to a thread.
We also lost all five of our ducks.
We've spent weeks sharing their growth with all of you, and it only felt right to share this part too. As much as it sickens me. As much as it breaks my heart. This is the reality of raising animals. No matter how much you care for them, sometimes tragedy still happens.
We're devastated, but we're choosing to let this loss teach us instead of stop us. We'll strengthen our coops, improve our predator protection, and keep moving forward.
Thank you for following our family's journey—the victories and the heartbreaks. We'd appreciate your prayers as we heal, recoup from these losses, both emotionally and financially, and attempt begin again. ❤️

250 years of history. 250 years of sacrifice. 250 years of freedom. 🇺🇸
When we chose the name Moss Heritage Homestead, we chose it with purpose.
To us, heritage isn't just about preserving homesteading skills. It's about passing down faith, values, traditions, and the story of the generations who came before us.
This Independence Day, we're especially thankful for the brave men and women who have defended the freedoms we enjoy every day. Their sacrifices are part of the heritage we want our children to know and remember.
As we celebrate with family, food, and fireworks, let's also take time to reflect on the blessings we have and the responsibility to pass them on.

Your first attempt doesn't have to be your last attempt. ❤️
This sourdough flop reminded me that building a homestead isn't about getting everything right—it's about being willing to learn. We chose to "bite off more than we can chew"... and then figure out how to chew it.
Every failed loaf, every garden mistake, every lesson with our animals has made us better than we were yesterday.
Don't wait until you feel ready. Start where you are, use what you have, and keep showing up. One day you'll look back and realize those failures were just part of the recipe.

Progress over perfection. 🦆🌱
Duck run #2 won't be our final version, but every project on the homestead is another step forward.
✔️ Closer to the garden for future pest control
✔️ More fresh grass to explore and snack on
✔️ A bigger pool until the stock tank gets here
✔️ Horse pellets to help keep the run they stay in at night cleaner and drier
It's easy to compare your beginning to someone else's finished farm, but we're building this one project at a time—and trying to enjoy the journey along the way.
