Behind every jar of Boro Bee Honey Company are two people who care deeply about the bees, the process, and the community they serve.

Jim Branson is the steady backbone of the beekeeping operation with a deep respect for the bees, and an eye for the details that truly matter. Jim is patient, thoughtful, and committed to doing things the right way. His commitment to research of hive health and management are a big reason the bees thrive and the honey is consistently high quality.

Morgan Evans brings the passion, education, and vision behind the brand. With deep roots in agriculture and a heart for community, Morgan is dedicated to sharing the story behind local honey and the importance of responsible beekeeping. She loves connecting people to where their food comes from, educating others about bees, and making sure every jar reflects care, integrity, and pride in local agriculture.

Together, Jim and Morgan share a commitment to producing exceptional local honey while caring for their bees and supporting Middle Tennessee agriculture. Every jar of Boro Bee Honey represents teamwork, stewardship, and a whole lot of love for what they do.

COOL BEEK POST!!!

🐝 Varroa Mite = Major Bee Enemy 🐝

As summer winds down, honey bee colonies are raising the last generation of brood that will become the winter bees (those responsible for keeping the hive alive until spring… spring bees vs winter bees is other COOL topic I’ll talk about later 😁). But late summer is also when Varroa mite populations peak, posing a serious threat to colony health.

🔴 They feed on bee fat bodies!
Varroa mites attach to adult bees and developing brood, feeding on their fat body tissue (an organ vital for bee immunity, detoxification, and overall health). This weakens the bees and makes them more vulnerable to other stressors.

🔬 Why test in late summer?
Even if your hive looked strong earlier in the season, mite levels can rise quickly in July and August. Without testing (we use an alcohol wash), it's impossible to know if treatment is needed.

💀 Why it matters:
High mite levels lead to virus transmission, reduced bee lifespan, and weaker winter bees. Colonies with unchecked Varroa infestations in late summer often don’t survive the winter!

🛠️ Timely treatment saves colonies (video of OA V***r treatment in comments)
If mite counts are above the threshold, treatment before fall is critical. Choosing the right treatment based on temperature and colony size can make all the difference. We decided to do an OA (oxalic acid) treatment of the course of a few weeks. OA v***r does not pe*****te capped brood (baby bee), so doing treatments over a few weeks ensures emerging bees get treatment as well.

🐝 Did You Know? Bees Have Pollen “Saddlebags”! 🌼

Next time you see a bee buzzing around flowers, take a closer look at its back legs — you might notice little yellow or orange clumps. Those are pollen sacs, also called pollen baskets or corbiculae!

As bees visit flowers, they collect pollen and pack it into these special sacs on their hind legs. It’s not just for storage — it’s how they carry food back to the hive to feed their colony. 💛 Each little ball of pollen is a powerful source of protein and nutrients for the hive’s brood (baby bees).

🐝 Fun Fact: A single bee can carry up to half its body weight in pollen!

Next time you're in the garden and see a busy bee with full saddlebags, give her a mental high-five for working so hard to keep nature (and your food supply) thriving! 🌸🍯

☀️🍯Our bees don’t have air conditioning, but they sure know how to keep things cool! When the summer sun starts blazing, bees go into action to keep their hive at the perfect temperature — around 93–95°F.
Here’s how they do it:
💧 Water Collectors bring droplets back to the hive.
🐝 Fanning Bees use their wings to create airflow.
🌬️ The combo creates ev***rative cooling—just like how we cool off by sweating!
