Southdown Trains

Southdown Trains We're a family raising our flock of Southdown sheep for 4-H and private sales. We choose to follow the ASBA breed standards rather than current trends.

Join us on our journey of daily life with our flock where each one has a name & we truly care 💕 We are a family of 4H kids who are breeding and raising our own herd of Southdown sheep. This is NOT a business, but a 4H project that we all work together on. Join us as we grow and learn together with our Southdowns that we plan for, breed, feed and grow. We do participate in our local county auction,

but our animals are chosen from those born and grown in our own backyard. There are ups and downs to raising our own animals. We appreciate your encouragement as we learn from what nature has to teach us.

'Tis the season where you'll see many posts about county fairs and 4-H achievement days. Our kids are among those who will exhibit at the county level in our state.

However, I'd like to address a misconception unknowingly being shared.

There are 4-H kids around the country who leave their county shows with the addition of generous premium checks to help offset their hefty expenses, especially if they have livestock.

But, there are more who receive only a ribbon, and sometimes not even that, after county or state events.

Stock show and 4-H kids aren't doing any of the work solely for the prizes, so don't get it twisted. They are investing deeply in themselves and their projects without expectation of support.

That's why folks who show up -- in person as volunteers and fans or as donors to make prizes and events possible -- are deeply important and must be appreciated.

So, I share this as a reminder.

1) If your child benefits from premium auctions or community support, make sure they understand their donors' generosity in a way that helps them express genuine appreciation ... in person if possible and in a thank you card at minimum.

2) Support those businesses and people who support your kids and their efforts.

Raising children to be productive members of society requires the same village support needed to help a business thrive.

3) If you are a business or person who supports 4-H kids in your community, THANK YOU!

Livestock kids especially invest thousands of dollars in the care and presentation of their animals ... yes, even when they exhibit animals from their own herds. Your acknowledgement of their efforts impacts them in positive ways that can be measured for years to come!

I believe in the power and purpose of programs like 4-H and FFA, but I also know the commitment required to be involved in these programs.

I know kids and families are being pulled in more directions now than ever before, especially as youth sports go crazy.

The kids who continue to choose 4-H over, or in addition to, other activities not only deserve but also appreciate your support of their efforts!

We didn't bring any of our sheep to our county fair this year, but we've been busy helping our club & our county competitions.
