Tiny little chicks that fit right in your hand.
Then somehow, you blink and they’re not little anymore. They’re walking around the farm, following you like they’ve always been here.
And then one day… you find their very first egg.
I think that’s one of the sweetest parts of raising animals. You don’t always notice the growing until you look back and realize how much has changed.

The work continues …

Most of the work around here happens one handful at a time.

Five years ago, we took a few steps and all of the sudden we found ourselves running. Bigger felt like the goal, so we kept moving before we were ready.

We learned some expensive lessons along the way.

We had to slow down, step back, and rebuild. This time, we focused on the small things again.

One chick, one egg, one nest box, one scoop of feed, one stack of flats.

But it is the repetition of those small things that actually keeps this farm moving in the direction we want.

Most things worth building start small.

The question we get every summer:
How are the hens still laying eggs in this heat?

Some lay, some don’t, some lay smaller eggs…

One thing is for sure, when temperatures climb, water becomes one of the most important things we pay attention to. We regularly check our water lines, watch the birds closely, and make sure everything is working the way it should.

We even have timers set up to periodically drain the hot water sitting in the lines so fresh water is always moving through the system.

Just one of the things that becomes part of the routine during a Texas summer.

You still have chores,,, even on quiet days.

Most days out here aren’t big moments.
Just showing up everyday taking care of what depends on you.

An egg is never just an egg on our family farm in Texas.

It starts with intentional care, repeated every day, long before it ever reaches someone else’s hands.

Different worlds. Same care.

What most people think a farm looks like … both worlds exist, the peaceful as well as the dusty and chaotic. We live in the middle of it.

Some mornings begin with coffee. However most mornings begin with warm eggs in our hands, the girls being loud letting you know they are happy to see you and a little dust floating through the barn. 🧡
