We have always said that the stars aligned when the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting took place. Joanne DePuy was one of the stars who made that pivotal moment happen.

It was Joanne who introduced Steven Spurrier and Patricia Gastaud-Gallagher to the Napa Valley winemakers whose bottles would go on to stun the world, and when customs threatened to keep those very wines from ever reaching Paris, it was Joanne who found a way to get them there herself, carrying them across the Atlantic with her own tour group.

Without her, there may not have been a Judgment of Paris at all.

Joanne joined us at the very first Judgment of Napa in 2021, and she was scheduled to be with us again this October 5th, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the tasting she helped make possible.

She will be deeply missed, and we will raise a toast in her honor.

Cultured Vine has announced key individuals attending the landmark event on the 85th birthday of the late Steven Spurrier, beloved British wine authority who orchestrated the original 1976 Paris tasting. Later known as the Judgment of Paris, the event radically changed the international playing field of wine.

Famously, the Paris event gathered nine of the best palates in France to judge California wines versus the finest reds and whites from Burgundy and Bordeaux. Fifty years later, several of California’s top winemakers will judge in a similar blind tasting, pitting Napa’s finest against the world.

Fifty Years Ago, a Blind Wine Tasting Event in Paris Changed Everything for California Reds and Whites. A once-in-a-generation blind tasting event to honor the 50th anniversary of the landmark Judgment of Paris has been announced. Cultured Vine, the luxury wine country experience specialist, has created Judgment of Napa to pay testament to that defining moment 50 years ago. The blind tasting event takes place on October 5, 2026 at Napa’s historic estate as a tribute to the late Steven Spurrier on what would have been his 85th birthday.

On the 24th of May in 1976, nine elite French wine judges, gathered to mark the US Bicentennial, scored California Chardonnay whites and Cabernet Sauvignon reds above the top wines of France. This unthinkable outcome, which came to be known as the Judgment of Paris, made history, and leveled the playing field across the world of wine.

On October 5, 2026 the Judgment of Napa will showcase for a select few guests, today's global wine titans - both classic and emerged - in an intimate, inimitable Napa Valley milieu of historic properties and icon personalities.

Their palates and collective blind tasting results will commemorate the Paris Tasting's 50th anniversary, and America’s 250th, through the lens of the world's top wines, and the artisan excellence they represent.

Every great event begins with someone who refuses to let history fade. Angela Duerr, Founder of Cultured Vine, made a promise to the late Steven Spurrier — that the spirit of the Judgment of Paris would not be forgotten.

Judgment of Napa is that promise, kept. "It is a profound privilege to carry this torch forward, and we have poured every ounce of that reverence into an experience that is as immersive as it is historic."
