Smokey Oak Farms

Farm located in southern Michigan. We were established in 2017 with a focus on locally raised, all natural Hereford beef and registered breeding stock.

They were happy to move to a new pasture. We are averaging 4-5 days per pasture before we rotate. We plan on turning them back into each pasture a second time after a a 60 day rest period.

What a wonderfully hectic May it has been! We have been busy planting our hay, soybeans and corn crops which are all in the ground and looking good! We were able to do some custom work raking rye for a fellow farmer.

We welcomed another heifer calf LPH MORNING GLORY to the herd, we are down to one cow yet to have a calf.

We are blessed every spring to see the beauty of nature and always see a wide variety of moths around the house.

As planting is done we now shift our gears to hay harvest and constantly watching and worrying about the weather. 🤪

Cows and calves are happy to finally be on pasture!

We are in the home stretch! Two cows left that are due the end of May so we have a little break but boy are these calves growing fast! Princes’ calves have really been showing off those “royal” bloodlines.

It’s been a whirlwind of calves being born here at the farm, we have had a few out of our old herd bull Pharaoh and quite a few out of the new herd bull Prince. To say we are pleased with the new bulls calves is an understatement, they have come unassisted, dark red, big b***d and tons of vigor! Check out the last pic of one of the smallest calves we have ever had, 45 lbs might be pushing it but momma is 13 and he is doing quite well.

The streak couldn’t last forever but we finished our ai group with 9 straight heifers and 1 bull calf! This bull made us wait an extra 8 days from his due date and but mama had no problems and they are doing great. Now onto the bull bred cows!

We have been on a heifer roll this year! We are now 7 for 7 with heifer calves. This group of four include calves out of Birdwell New Standard, Churchill Sherman, and Duff Ringo. Three more ai bred cows to go and the bull bred cows are starting to get close too!

We are now 3 for 3 on heifers this year! We had a nice Churchill Red Cloud and then we got a super stout commercial heifer out of our new herd sire Rosewood Prince.

We are also really liking our yearling group of heifers! It’s been a long time since we have retained a group this large but they are all so good that we couldn’t resist.

Calving season has not started out well for us this year with two cows aborting heifer calves and a third cow having and issue that caused us to ship her but today we got our first ray of sunshine and a really cool Fresh Prince x Duff Ringo heifer calf out of a heifer unassisted! 7 more cows due anytime now 😅

We had to get our annual Michigan Beef Expo family picture! We were bummed to not participate this year but instead we got the most amazing gift of all, another member of our family! 🎀

Congrats to all the consignors on a great set of cattle and on an awesome sale!

We look forward to participating in 2027 and bringing our best as always! 🔥🔥
