Try! is one of those records where the lineup is almost unfairly good. I’d lean into the blues, funk, pocket, and interplay rather than just calling it a great Mayer record. The original album was recorded live at the House of Blues in Chicago in 2005, with John Mayer on guitar/vocals, Pino Palladino on bass, and Steve Jordan on drums.

John Mayer Trio — Try! 🎸🎶

My copy of this killer 180g pressing of Try! — a record that still sounds absolutely incredible.

And what a lineup: John Mayer, Pino Palladino, and Steve Jordan. Mayer brings the guitar chops, but it’s the chemistry between these three that makes this record special. Pino’s bass lines are deep in the pocket, Steve Jordan’s drumming is ridiculously musical, and together they create a groove that just pulls you in.

The playing is loose, bluesy, funky, and completely alive. You can hear three musicians listening to each other and pushing each other in real time. The groove and feel are just as important as the notes — and that’s what makes Try! such a fun record to spin. 🔥

And tonight, that groove is paired with some pâté de campagne. Good food. Good music.

If you’d like the recipe, comment “recipe” and I’ll send you a DM.

A dream come true for me as a huge GIANT fan. I grew up listening to all of dannhuff ‘s music. The fact that I had the opportunity to travel to Nashville for this show 3rd & Lindsley is a true blessing that I do not take for granted. I hope this is the beginning of a new chapter and as a record collector, maybe even LP reissues. Nerds can only dream.

I almost finished this day without remembering that a day like today back in 1990 we lost one of the most influential guitar players in guitar history. It was when I discovered Stevie Ray Vaughan when I spent countless hours going back-and-forth through his catalog and trying to learn his guitar riffs and licks. Stevie played with his soul and left in irrefutable legacy that will never be forgotten. I am forever an SRV fan.
