✨Story Time✨

We started with chickens (again) in 2024. One Sunday we rode to Tractor Supply and when we walked in the kids immediately turned around and screamed “they have baby chicks!! I hear them chirping mama!!” Needless to say we walked out with 16 chicks, a heat lamp, a storage tote and a bag of feed.

That number quickly got up to 54 and while they were all bought as pullets, we had quite a few roosters. We moved all these babies out to their new coop and run on April 15th 2024. They loved being outside and were doing so good!

On May 16th, tragedy struck and completely devastated us. Two stray dogs managed to break into our run and killed 44 of our babies just for sport. Left them lying where they ended them. A few babies were spared because they hid in various places, one Sapphire Gem pullet was alive but badly injured and some were unaccounted for and assumed dead. We searched the property for hours for survivors and did end up finding 7 unharmed. These we called the OGs. We miraculously had one Golden Comet pulled show up one morning as I was walking out to go to work *6 DAYS* later! A true miracle and it just so happened to be my daughter’s favorite “my girl” 😊 This is where the phrase “OG 9” was started. We still have these babies with the exception of the one very special rooster, a Sapphire Splash, coined “Daddy”.

He was the best rooster I have ever known. So protective of the ladies, always alerted to new treats found, so good with humans and our cats, just the perfect guy. He gave his life for his flock when a fox threatened them. Again, we were truly devastated to lose one of the OG 9. My daughter still talks about how much she misses him.

This simple white metal rooster was found at a bargain store for $4 the week after we lost him. I got it and asked my mother-in-law if she thought she could paint it to look like him. She said she thought she could and took it home. I hadn’t thought about it because it’s been about a year and life has been crazy. She surprised me Wednesday with it and I have cried every time I look at it! Happy tears of course because it looks exactly like him and it’s something I will treasure forever 🩵 let me know what you think! Did she nail it or what?!

Pictures of the whole crew, then the OG 9, then Daddy as he grew, the pictures of him I sent her and the last two are of my little metal Daddy replica ❤️

We have truly been enjoying our Christmas here on the homestead. We welcomed 13 beautiful kikiriki babies from our flock and one of the most beautiful babies I think I have ever seen 🥰 they all just transferred to the new brooder tonight and are doing well! I think we will have quite a few bolos in this batch!

The little cutie was also born with blue legs! Can’t wait to see how it grows! My daughter has coined it Spot for now, expect regular updates on Spot as they grow 🩵

Ok, here comes another product review! I feel like people may be sleeping on this 🤷‍♀️ if you breed bantams like I do, you know they are extremely susceptible to vitamin deficiencies and when they strike, it can take them down fast. They also do better with a little extra protein compared to large fowl breeds.

That’s where this feed comes in! The small size of the micro crumb is great for bantam chicks, it does amazing with making a mash for the first week, it has 24% protein and extra thiamine (vitamin B1 - which is the deficiency that causes wry neck) and it’s from a great company who doesn’t fill their feed with trash ingredients. Nutrena Feed has really changed the game with my kikiriki babies and seramas. I was losing too many chicks before I switched to this feed and in my last 3 hatches (46 total), I have lost 3 chicks to unrelated issues. Maybe next time you head to grab feed, grab a bag of this to try. Literally my only complaint is that it doesn’t come in a bigger bag 😝
