Your GF Brief for August 7: a new celiac support subsidy in Spain, a labeling mix-up at Sydney Airport, four gluten-labeling bills before Congress, a pending celiac drug acquisition, advancing legislation in Italy, and recalls across three countries.

🔹 Spain’s Castilla-La Mancha region has opened applications for its 2026 celiac support program.
Eligible residents with celiac disease can receive €500 per person, up to €1,000 per household, to help offset gluten-free diet costs; applications close August 31.

🔹 Sydney Airport responded to an influencer’s gluten-free complaint.
The airport shared seven suggested options across its terminals, but the venues' own labeling varies — “gluten free,” “gluten-free friendly,” “no added gluten” — terms that don't all mean the same level of safety for celiac travelers.

🔹 Four gluten-related bills are now before the U.S. Congress.
The FASTER Act would expand allergen labeling beyond wheat and require an HHS report on celiac disease, joining three other proposals affecting food and medication labeling. None have become law.

🔹 argenx plans to acquire Forte Biosciences, adding a celiac drug candidate to its pipeline.
The proposed $2.2 billion deal would add FB102 after Forte reported positive Phase 1b celiac results. Phase 2 data are expected later this year, although the treatment remains investigational.

🔹 Emilia-Romagna has selected a base text for proposed celiac disease legislation.
The regional Health Commission chose one of two bills for further work on diagnosis, care, existing gluten-free food support, and foodservice training; it has not yet become law.

🔹 Three countries announced new gluten-related food recalls.
Lidl US expanded a recall of Eridanous shortbread sold without English allergen information, the UK recalled Lay’s Sour Cream & Dill Crisps for undeclared wheat and milk, and Australia recalled Viet Meatballs Chinese Sausage for undeclared gluten.

Six stories covering the latest in celiac policy, diagnosis guidance, and recalls. The Gluten-Free Brief — July 21, 2026.

🔹 Tunisia just quadrupled its gluten-free food allowance.
A new decree raises the monthly allowance for low-income people with celiac disease or wheat/gluten hypersensitivity from 30 to 130 dinars — about $44 a month — and puts the increase into effect. To qualify, families must be registered in Tunisia's Social Safety Net Program and have the diagnosis certified by a medical committee.

🔹 The UK just changed how some adults get diagnosed with celiac disease.
Under new BSG guidance, adults with antibody levels above 10x the normal limit — confirmed by a second blood test — can skip the biopsy entirely, covering an estimated 20–30% of symptomatic adults. Everyone else still needs one, since a single result alone isn't conclusive enough. Either way, a specialist must confirm it, not a GP. Patients should also continue eating gluten until testing is complete.

🔹 Only 3 in 10 people felt informed at diagnosis.
CDF's iCureCeliac registry surveyed 18,000+ people with celiac disease and found just 29.8% strongly agreed their doctor clearly explained how to manage the disease when they were diagnosed, suggesting many patients leave that first appointment without a clear plan for a lifelong condition.

🔹 Children with type 1 diabetes should be screened for celiac disease — and a Saudi study just reinforced why.
Among 407 kids with T1D, about 13.7% of those screened for celiac tested positive, alongside elevated thyroid dysfunction and vitamin D deficiency. It's not a one-off: multiple Saudi studies over the past decade have found similarly high rates, consistently among the highest reported in published studies. Not a breakthrough, but a solid reminder to keep celiac screening routine in T1D care.

🔹 Gluten just got its first science-based threshold for "may contain" warnings.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission adopted a 4 mg gluten reference dose for precautionary allergen labeling this month — a global first. It doesn't touch the 20 ppm "gluten-free" threshold; it only standardizes when a cross-contact warning is warranted. AOECS, CDF, Celiac Canada, and Coeliac UK all pushed for it. The guidance is advisory, so implementation will depend on how individual countries incorporate it into national regulations.

🔹 Stroke patient with celiac disease was repeatedly served gluten.
A nursing student in New Zealand says Waitākere Hospital repeatedly offered her wheat-bread sandwiches despite her condition. She also discovered her prescribed medication was not gluten free.

🔹 Celiac disease topped a Norwegian childhood study.
In a nationwide study of ~1M children, 2.6% developed an autoimmune disease by age 18, with celiac disease showing the highest incidence. About 5% developed more than one autoimmune disease.

🔹 Malta’s celiac community challenged misleading TV remarks.
The Coeliac Association Malta filed a formal complaint with the Broadcasting Authority after comments on TVM’s Bundy Time were said to mock medically necessary gluten-free diets.

🔹 A gluten-free beer order ended with a mocking receipt.
In Spain, a customer with celiac disease says a bar printed “tonta celi” (“stupid celiac”) on her receipt after she requested a gluten-free beer. The case went viral, and the business later apologized publicly.
