Today, we’re recognizing the crews, dock workers, buyers, drivers, fuel teams, gear suppliers, office staff and everyone else who keeps this industry moving every day.

Before we head offshore, one of the most important steps is making sure each vessel has the right amount of ice for the trip ahead.

For years, Crystal Ice Company has been a trusted part of that process, supplying each vessel with anywhere between 10 to 35 tons of clean, fresh ice before heading out. And the amount of ice we take with us depends on numerous factors, including seasonality and weather.

Once below deck, the ice is spread throughout the fish pens and moved by hand as needed by our crews. It’s just one of the many behind-the-scenes steps that goes into bringing a quality catch home!

Today, New Bedford is the most valuable commercial fishing port in the United States, but the industry we know today wasn’t built overnight. It grew out of necessity, resilience and generations of people willing to adapt.

As whaling declined and the city’s textile industry began to fade, another working waterfront was already taking shape. Small fishing boats gave way to larger vessels, technology evolved and, as the fleet grew, so did the network of gear suppliers, fish houses, cold storage facilities, auctions, processors and distributors needed to support it.

Over time, that network helped build the fishing industry that continues to drive New Bedford’s waterfront today.

One of the most important parts of our history is the knowledge that has been passed down through generations. Captains, crews, family businesses and waterfront workers have learned from those who came before them, while continuing to adapt to an industry that never stops changing.

Our latest blog looks at the generations of reinvention behind New Bedford’s seafood industry and how that history continues to shape the port today.

Next up in our Meet the Fleet series: the F/V Sophia C.

The daughter of co-founder Richie Canastra and his wife, Roberta, Sophia Canastra has always embodied something deeply rooted in our family: showing up for the people you love.

Looking out for one another, lending a hand when it’s needed and genuinely wanting the best for those around us has always been part of who we are—and Sophia carries that spirit naturally.

Inspired by the care she received in hospitals as a child, Sophia knew from an early age that she wanted to become a nurse and one day provide that same sense of comfort and support to others.

This past May, after years of hard work and dedication, she graduated cm laude from Salve Regina University with her BSN. After passing the NCLEX in July, she will begin her career as a registered nurse at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River next week.

Anyone who knows Sophia will tell you that nursing is a natural fit. She has a warmth that immediately puts people at ease. Whether you need someone to listen, some reassurance or help working through a problem, Sophia genuinely engages with the people around her and makes them feel heard.

Outside of work, Sophia loves spending quality time with family and friends and enjoying the occasional weekend getaway with her partner, Brad.

We’d prefer that you never have to meet Sophia while wearing a hospital bracelet—but if you do find yourself at Charlton, you couldn’t ask for a kinder nurse to have by your side.

Next up in our Meet the Crew series: Victor.

Salt Vick has spent the past 12 years building his career on the water, starting on a 40-foot lobster boat out of Fairhaven before moving into the red crab fishery and eventually joining the crew of the F/V Noella C with Captain Henrique Franco. Victor today serves as the engineer aboard the F/V Debra C, still by Captain Henrique's side.

As engineer, Victor keeps a close eye on the engine room and deck operations, helps direct the crew and works alongside Henrique to make the day-to-day decisions that keep each trip running smoothly. He’s also working toward becoming a full-time captain and already steps into the role to take the boat out when Henrique is off.

Victor is the first fisherman in his family, but he may not be the last. His 18-year-old son already helps the crew unload the boats and is eager to start heading out on trips himself. For Victor, passing along that same work ethic and passion for fishing is part of what keeps him motivated.

Fishing has always been more than a job for Victor. He loves the lifestyle, the peacefulness of being on the water and the camaraderie of the crew.

And if you’ve enjoyed some of the incredible photos and videos we’ve shared from life at sea, there’s a good chance Victor was behind the camera! We’re grateful for the way he helps give our community a firsthand look at life aboard the fleet—and proud to have him as part of the Canastra Fishing team.
