Liberty Fields Homestead We keep multiple types of fowl and advocate for doing things the "old way".

We are a veteran/first responder owned local hobby farm that is home to herd of ND goats, a Dexter heifer, two mini Highbelt heifers and a bottle lamb named Charlie!

One of the things we are most excited about with The Way Station is creating space not just for our family’s products — but for other local makers, growers, artisans, bakers, craftsmen, and small businesses as well.

We’ve already started conversations with several incredible local vendors, and it has reminded us just how talented this community truly is.

Our vision has always been bigger than a store.

We want The Way Station to feel like an old-fashioned gathering place:
a space filled with locally made products, refill staples, warm conversations, practical workshops, and the kind of community connection that feels increasingly rare these days.

As we continue preparing for opening this summer, we would love to hear from local makers and small businesses who may be interested in partnering with us in the future.

Things we’re especially interested in carrying include:
• pottery & woodworking
• local honey
• sourdough
• herbal products & teas
• handmade candles & soaps
• sewn, quilted, or fiber goods
• locally roasted coffee
• homestead & pantry items
• handcrafted children’s items

And plan to expand to:
• locally grown produce (seasonally) and farm products!

Our business plan is buildable and we are starting simple with bulk dry goods with the intention to further build out to perishable and refrigerated products!

If you’re a local maker — or know someone who is — tag them below or send us a message. We would love to connect.

This dream keeps growing because of all of you, and we are so grateful for the excitement and encouragement surrounding The Way Station already.

This is incredible popcorn! (A bag barely makes it home in our house😂)

There’s something special about a mid-day, mid-week kind of pick-me-up. ☕

Sometimes, you want the comfort and energy of coffee… but with a satisfying crunch, instead of a cup. That inspiration led us to create our newest flavor: Espresso Toffee Caramel. 🤎

We’ll have it available while it lasts today at the Harvest at the Harbour Farmers Market from 4–7.

And if you can’t make it there, you can always order online — we offer free delivery in Fairfield Harbour and prepare every batch fresh for shipping as well.

We hope to see you today!

One of the questions we’ve been getting most often is:

“What exactly will The Way Station carry?”

And also “How will this work?”

The honest answer is: we’re starting intentionally, and building thoughtfully.

Our initial bulk offerings will focus on pantry staples and household essentials — things families actually use every day. Right now, our starting list includes over 50 bulk items such as:

• Wheat berries (including some ancient grains)• Flour, rice, oats, cornmeal & popcorn• Beans, sugars, baking staples & Celtic salt• Vinegar, laundry soap, borax, washing soda, baking soda & more

One thing that’s especially important to our family is offering gluten free options. Our oldest daughter has a severe wheat allergy, so while our gluten free selection will begin modestly, it absolutely matters to us and will continue growing over time. We currently plan to carry gluten free rice, oats, cornmeal, and additional GF staples as we expand.

This store is not meant to appear overnight as a giant finished concept. What we open with is the foundation — and then we’ll continue adding products, listening to the community, and growing intentionally over the next year and beyond.

We also LOVE hearing your suggestions. Several people have already requested additional gluten free items, cloth produce bags, specialty grains, refill items, and more — and we’re actively sourcing and planning as we go.

Our goal is to make The Way Station feel useful, welcoming, practical, and community-driven.

We’ll have glass and paper containers available for purchase, but we also encourage customers to bring their own jars and containers to refill whenever possible.

This whole project has been built around the idea of slowing down a little, wasting less, supporting small businesses, and bringing back some of the old ways that many of us have missed.

And honestly? Seeing how excited this community already is has meant more to us than we can say.

Thank you for believing in this dream with us.

Over the past few days, we’ve had so many new people join this page that we thought it might be a good time to introduce ourselves and share a little of the story behind The Way Station.

I’m Jen. I’ve called New Bern home since 1995, attended Garber Church for over 30 years, and spent the last 21 years as a nurse — most of that time in emergency medicine, with the last several years as a flight nurse serving eastern North Carolina.

My husband Louis was born in East Rochester, New York, but the Army National Guard brought him here years ago, and Eastern NC became home. He is a veteran, firefighter/paramedic with Pine Knoll Shores, and also serves as a 68 Whiskey instructor at Fort Bragg.

Together, we are raising six children, and between family life, homesteading, emergency services, and years spent caring for others, we found ourselves longing for something slower and more rooted — a place centered around community, hospitality, craftsmanship, gathering, and the simple beauty of everyday life.

What started as Liberty Fields Homestead slowly grew into a much bigger dream.

The Way Station is our attempt to create the kind of place we feel the world has been missing lately:
a warm and welcoming modern general store rooted in old ways and intentional living.

A place for bulk dry goods, handmade goods, local makers, workshops, gathering spaces, conversation, and community.

But more than anything, we hope it becomes a place that simply feels good to walk into.

We are incredibly grateful for the encouragement this community has already shown us. The support, excitement, kind messages, and shared enthusiasm have honestly meant more to our family than we can fully express.

Thank you for being here with us at the beginning. We truly cannot wait to open the doors this summer.

The response to The Way Station has meant more to us than we can put into words.

So many of you have reached out, shared memories of old general stores, told us what this kind of space would mean to your families, and offered encouragement as we bring this dream to life here in downtown New Bern.

Today, we’re honored to officially introduce our Founders Circle — a limited opportunity to help build The Way Station from the very beginning.

These memberships will directly help us open our doors this summer while creating something deeply rooted in community, craftsmanship, slower living, and the old ways so many of us have been longing for again.

Every single membership truly matters to our family, and we cannot wait to welcome you into this story with us.
