☀️ Late summer in SW Michigan just hit its stride, and we've got the perfect excuse to be outside with a glass in hand.

This week's sample bar is all about the spritz. We're featuring Spritz del Conte Vermouth, an Italian white vermouth built on a traditional herb-and-botanical-infused white wine base with a touch of bright citrus and bitter orange — aromatic, herbal, and easy to sip slowly. Vermouth's having a real moment now: more drinkers are reaching for it as a lower-ABV standalone aperitif instead of just a Martini ingredient, and once you taste it, you'll get why.

We're pairing it with Oliveros Sparkling Wine, a crisp Brut from a family-run Spanish winery — clean bubbles, light citrus and orchard fruit, dry finish.

Together, herbal citrusy vermouth meets crisp dry bubbles for an easy, refreshing summer spritz. Come taste them built exactly as we serve it, or sample each on its own and build your own version at home. We'll walk you through it either way — plus we have a full lineup of chilled wine on hand for the warm weekend ahead.

August is here, and so is this month's Wine Society selection — and we think it might be our most interesting lineup yet. 🍷

We've got a Riesling that isn't from Germany, a German wine that isn't Riesling, and one of California's most compelling — and rarely seen — single-varietal bottlings. Here's what's in the box this month:

🇦🇺 Pikes Hills & Valleys Riesling 2024 — Clare Valley, Australia
Everyone knows Riesling comes from Germany. Except when it comes from Australia and turns out to be just as extraordinary. Bright citrus, stone fruit, and a zing of acidity that makes this wine impossible to put down.

🇩🇪 Shelter Winery Spätburgunder 2021 — Baden, Germany
Our German wine this month isn't a Riesling — it's a Pinot Noir. Made by a husband-and-wife team in a winery built on a former military airfield, this is elegant, earthy, and quietly stunning. Give it a little air and it opens up beautifully.

🇺🇸 Domaine de la Terre Rouge Mourvèdre 2014 — Sierra Foothills, California
A 100% Mourvèdre, twelve years old and drinking at its absolute peak. Mourvèdre is the dark, brooding backbone of some of the world's greatest blends — but it almost never gets to stand alone. This month, it does.

✨ Not a member yet? Here's why you should be:

🍷 Sample Bar This Week: A Taste of Portugal Meets Spain

Two bottles, two very different vibes — come taste them both.

2025 Arca Nova Vinho Verde Rosé (Portugal)
Pale, bright framboise-pink in the glass with a playful little spritz. On the nose: crushed strawberries and raspberries with a splash of lime; on the palate, that same juicy red-fruit character carries through, balanced by lively acidity and a whisper of natural effervescence that makes this endlessly easy to drink. Light, fresh, and built for sipping.
This isn't a still rosé with bubbles added — it's a genuine Vinho Verde, a style unique to Portugal's lush, green Minho region that's traditionally bottled with a light natural fizz. The blend leans on Espadeiro and Touriga Nacional, two grapes you won't find almost anywhere else in the wine world.

2025 Orlegi de Luberri Rioja (Spain)
A classic, lighter-bodied young Tempranillo from Rioja Alavesa — juicy red and dark fruit (cherry, plum, blackberry) with soft floral notes, a touch of spice, and gentle, well-integrated tannins. Fresh, food-friendly, and dangerously easy to keep pouring.
Luberri ferments a portion of this wine using whole-cluster carbonic maceration — grapes go into the tank whole, uncrushed, so fermentation starts inside each individual berry. It's the same technique behind Beaujolais Nouveau, and it's what gives this Rioja its signature juicy, fresh-fruit charm instead of the bigger, oakier style Rioja is often known for.

Stop by and taste them side by side this weekend — Saturday 11–6, Sunday 12–5. Two wines, two countries, zero reason not to swing by. 🍇

🍒🍇 THIS WEEKEND'S SAMPLE BAR: MICHIGAN MEETS GALICIA 🍇🍒

We've got two wines on the bar this weekend that couldn't be more different — one from right up the coast on the Leelanau Peninsula, one from a thousand-year-old walled vineyard in northern Spain. Come taste them side by side.

🍒 Bel Lago Cherry Wine (Leelanau Peninsula, Michigan)
A gorgeous, rich cherry-red wine made from a blend of heirloom tart cherries — Balaton and Montmorency — grown on family farms in Michigan's cherry country. Juicy cherry and red currant up front, a little spice, a touch of oak. This isn't a syrupy cherry cooler — it's a real, structured wine that happens to taste like a Michigan summer.
Bel Lago co-founder Amy Iezzoni is a cherry expert through and through — she's spent her career studying cherry genetics, and this wine is basically her life's work in a glass.

🇪🇸 Peza do Rei Blanco 2021 (Ribeira Sacra, Spain)
A bright, mineral-driven white blend of Godello, Treixadura, and Albariño. Straw yellow with green highlights, aromas of quince and wet stone, floral notes, a saline edge, and a clean, dry finish. This is what happens when old vines meet steep river-terraced slate.
"Peza do Rei" translates to something like "the King's plot," land once used by the Kings of León as a private hunting retreat and income source. You're drinking a piece of that history.

You're not going to stumble onto either of these pours anywhere else around here. Taste them for free before you commit to a bottle, and grab a few to take home.

🕰️ Today until 6, Saturday 11–6, Sunday 12–5. See you at this weekend! 🍷

🍹 NEW IN: SOCIAL HOUR CANNED COCKTAILS 🍹

Ok, we need to talk about these. We just brought in a new line of canned cocktails and they are NOT the sad, watered-down, taste-like-a-Jolly-Rancher stuff you're used to seeing at the grocery store. These are real cocktails, made right, packed into a can — and they hit at 11%+ ABV, so a little goes a long way.

Our move? Pour one over ice with a splash of club soda. Stretches it into a lighter, spritzier drink without losing any of the flavor — perfect for slow afternoons on the patio.

Here's why they're different: 🍸 Bartender-created 🥃 Made with premium New York spirits 🌿 All-natural ingredients 🚫 No artificial sweeteners 🌾 Gluten free

This is what happens when someone who actually knows how to make a cocktail puts it in a can instead of a chemist.

$5.50/can. Five flavors to choose from:

🌶️ Pink Peppercorn Paloma — grapefruit and lime with a spicy little kick on the back end
🌸 Cherry Blossom Cosmo — a dressed-up classic, floral and just the right amount of tart
🍋 Yuzu Sunset Fizz — bright, citrusy, and effortlessly refreshing
🍸 Navy Strength Gin & Tonic — for people who actually want to taste the gin
🥒 Cucumber Matcha Mojito — cool, herbal, a little unexpected, very good

Come grab a few and build your own flight — we'll help you figure out your favorite. See you at Social Hour! 🥂

🚨 Rare Wine Alert! 🚨

Some wines are simply delicious. Others become an annual treasure hunt.

Whittaker Wine Merchants has managed to secure a handful of bottles of the legendary 2025 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé. 🍷

If you know, you know.

Every spring, wine lovers across the country scramble to get on waiting lists for Tempier. In cities like Chicago, these bottles often disappear before they ever hit the shelves. Thanks to our relationships with top importers, we’ve managed to bring a small allocation to New Buffalo.

Why all the excitement?

✨ Domaine Tempier is widely considered the benchmark for Bandol Rosé from Provence. Family-owned since 1834, the estate helped put Bandol on the map and has earned a cult following among sommeliers, collectors, and wine lovers worldwide.

Made primarily from Mourvèdre, with Grenache and Cinsault, this is not your average porch rosé. Expect layers of wild strawberry, white peach, citrus peel, herbs, crushed stone, and a whisper of Mediterranean sea breeze. Rich, textured, and incredibly food-friendly, it’s equally at home with grilled seafood, roast chicken, Provençal dishes, or simply good friends.

Tempier Rosé is one of the world’s great age-worthy rosés. While it’s beautiful today, it will continue to evolve gracefully for 5 to 10 years or more, developing savory complexity and remarkable depth.

We only have a few bottles. Once they’re gone, they’re gone until next vintage… if we’re lucky enough to get them again.

📍 Stop by Whittaker Wine Merchants and claim your bottle before someone else does.

Because some wines are worth the wait… but only if you don’t wait too long. 🍷

🇺🇸 JULY WINE SOCIETY | A Celebration of American Wine 🇺🇸
This month, we're celebrating America's 250th anniversary with an all-American lineup that showcases just how exciting U.S. wine has become. Instead of the usual suspects, we've traveled from Michigan to Oregon to Long Island in search of wines that surprise, delight and tell a story.

🍾 Bel Lago Sparkling Auxerrois Brut 2024📍 Leelanau Peninsula, MichiganBright citrus, white peach and crisp green apple with delicate bubbles and a creamy finish. Auxerrois is rarely bottled on its own. Best known as a blending grape in France's Alsace region, Bel Lago has helped prove it can produce outstanding sparkling wine right here in Michigan.

🍷 Foris Flyover Red 2016📍 Rogue Valley, OregonA Bordeaux-inspired blend with notes of blackberry, black currant, baking spice and silky tannins. The name Flyover is a nod to Southern Oregon, a spectacular wine region many travelers literally fly over on their way to Portland without realizing what they're missing.

🍷 Lieb Cellars Cabernet Franc 2019📍 North Fork, Long Island, New YorkElegant red and black fruit layered with cedar, dried herbs and subtle spice. Long Island's maritime climate and sandy soils are remarkably similar to Bordeaux, making Cabernet Franc one of the region's rising stars.

✨ Why Wine Society?
Wine Society isn't just a wine club. It's a monthly journey of discovery. Every selection is handpicked to introduce you to exceptional wines, distinctive regions and remarkable producers you may never have found on your own. Along the way, you'll learn the stories behind the wines, enjoy exclusive member pricing, and become part of a community that shares a passion for great wine.

🍷 These July selections are available exclusively to Wine Society members through July 31. Beginning August 1, any remaining bottles will be released to the public... if there are any left!
