Part 3 - Care for Your Bouquet at Home

You have purchased your bouquet and now are ready to display your flowers. Wait – there are a few steps to ensure a long vase life.

1. Fill a vase with a tepid mix of floral water. Tepid temperature encourages take up in the plant stem more than cold water. I also recommend making floral water. The recipe is below.
2. Cut an inch of stem off with a sharp, clean knife. Never use scissors. Cut at a 45-degree angle to improve water uptake.
3. Immediately place in your floral water.
4. Avoid placing your bouquet in direct sunlight or near a heat source.
5. Every other day, replace the floral water.

Following these simple steps can help your flowers have a long vase life.

In the future, I will be supplying plastic bags and wet paper towels to prevent your stems from drying out on the way home.
And as always, take the vase. Just bring it back when you are done with it.

Mix and use
1 quart lukewarm water
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon household bleach
2 teaspoons lemon juice or vinegar

Come on down to the Children’s Fair this Saturday. I’ll be running the barnyard and am bringing my sheep. The local 4H club will also be there to show their animals and answer any questions.

Part 2 Prepping the Flowers for Display

Hello – I just put new bouquets out. I only put out a few due to the heat. If you want a bouquet and the selection is minimal, message me (or text 978-798-8020), and I’ll make one up for you.

In Part 1, we went from the field to letting the flowers left in the dark or placed in the refrigerator.

The next step in the process of making a bouquet is to select the clean vase and fill with tap cold water. Using a sharp knife or floral snips, cut at least ½ to 1 inch at the bottom of the stem. If you are cutting your own flowers, do not use your kitchen shears or regular scissors. Scissors crush the stem and reduce the flow of water into the flower – thus reducing its vase life.

Following that, I heat condition each flower stem and greens. Heat conditioning forces air bubbles out of the stem – thereby improving the movement of water up the stem.
Flowers are then placed in a floral solution with basically bleach and sugar to provide nutrition and reduce the development of bacteria and algae.

The completed bouquets and arrangement then head to the farmstand, stored in refrigerator or head out to fulfill custom orders.

Using this method, I have had arrangements last a week.
