Yorkville Cellars - Maybe the most holistic winery in America?
As long as anyone, the vineyards for Yorkville were first certified by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) in 1986 and for over three decades no synthetic pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers have been used on the property. Nine different varietals are farmed on the coastal influence border and the edge of the Navarro River Watershed. The dedicated AVA known as “Yorkville-Highlands” sits between Sonoma’s Alexander Valley and Mendocino’s Anderson Valley. Small in geography but produces high quality organic fruit and some of the best known wineries in California source fruit from the AVA - including - Copain, Talisman and Williams Selyem.
Yorkville enjoys annual climate swings from cold and moist to dry and hot, this balance of extremes provides the vineyards with a holistic cycle from which helps produce smooth full body Bordeaux blends and single varietal bottlings.
Sauvignon Blanc, 2023 - Fruit and spices, with notes of white peach and passionfruit - there's no lack of flavor. A flagship wine, aged to perfection in French Oak barrels providing just enough plushness without being heavy on the palate. $156/1; 138/3; 126/5
Hi-Rollr Red, 2021 - The name ‘Hi-Rollr’ has it’s origins in the late 1800s referring to locals (think Hill Billies) who lived in the hills of Yorkville. Passing through streams to cross they would roll up their pant legs in order not to get wet - but would often forget to roll them down when they got to town - thus - Hi-Rollr was a term used to call these locals. The 'Hi-Rollr' spirit embodies the pure joy of life's daily pleasures - Malbec, Cabernet, Petit Verdot, Cab Franc, Merlot and Carmenere. Hi-Rollr Red reveals an intriguing complexity on the palate, showcasing not only the vibrant flavors of cherries and boysenberries but also a subtle earthiness that adds depth to the tasting experience. $168/1; 156/3; 144/5
Cabernet Sauvignon, 2020/21 - The wine is medium-bodied, structured with smooth tannins and notes of spice along with elegant fruit flavors. Aging in 100% French Oak imparts subtle aromas and flavors of toasted walnut. $264/1; 252/2; 240/3
