COMMUTER REIMBURSEMENTS SHOULDN'T COUNT AS INCOME. BUT THEY DO.

My company reimburses me $160 a month for my transit pass.

I pay for the pass out of my own pocket first, then get that exact amount back.

Net result: $0. I'm not ahead a single dollar.

But that $160 still gets counted as income when my social insurance premiums are calculated, which bumps my monthly contribution up by about $14.

So I front the money, get reimbursed, and still end up $14 poorer than if I'd just walked to work.

WHY WOULD YOU BUY A HOUSE RIGHT NOW ?

In the last five years, mortgage interest rates roughly doubled.

House prices climbed 45-60% in most major markets.

You're looking at the worst affordability ratio in decades.

If you're financing — not paying cash — the monthly payment on a median home is now higher than the monthly rent in many markets.

You're paying more per month as a mortgage holder than you would as a renter, with none of the flexibility.

That math is brutal.

The only scenario where it makes sense: you're planning to stay 10+ years, you can afford the payment without stretching, and you have a solid down payment saved.

Otherwise, you're just locking yourself into a worse deal than what's sitting on the rental market.

Someone earning $2,750 a month shouldn't have to feel guilty about spending $12 on Hulu.

Rent: $1,350
Groceries: $420
Utilities: $240
Car payment or transit: $280
Insurance: $180

That's $2,470 spent. They have $280 left for everything else — phone bill, gas if they drive, clothing, medical copays, toiletries, literally everything.

Then they want one small thing — a streaming service, a coffee, a book — and everyone's suddenly a financial expert lecturing them about discipline.

The $12 isn't the problem. The problem is $1,350 rent on a $2,750 income. The problem is $420 groceries for one person. The problem is that working full-time leaves you $280 away from disaster.

You don't fix that by eliminating someone's one small pleasure.

You fix it by making housing affordable, paying people enough to actually live, and acknowledging that poor people deserve the same small joys everyone else gets..

ONLY ABOUT 10% OF US HOUSEHOLDS MAKE $200K OR MORE ANNUALLY.

Don't let the internet fool you into thinking six-figure incomes are common.

They're not.

The vast majority of American households operate on far less. Most people grinding at full-time jobs will never clear $100k household income.

That $200k milestone? That puts you in the top 10-12% of earners.

It's not the floor. It's the ceiling for most of the country.

Is $200k a significant achievement? Absolutely.

But when people online talk like it's ordinary, they're operating in a bubble that has almost nothing to do with how most Americans actually live.

The gap between "doing well" and the median household is wider than most people realize.

WE'RE SYSTEMATICALLY LOCKING SENIORS OUT OF BASIC BANKING, AND IT'S HAPPENING QUIETLY.

I took my 82-year-old father to his credit union branch on Wednesday.

He's been a member since 1982. Walked in the same door for over four decades to do his banking.

The branch doors were locked.

A handwritten sign: "Digital-Only Services Now."

Someone let us in. I asked about depositing his Social Security check.

"He'll need to use the mobile app. Scan the check with his phone camera, upload it through the portal."

My dad pulled out a basic Nokia flip phone. Cracked screen. Twelve years old.

The staff person just blinked. "He could use a computer, or have someone else handle it for him."

This man worked thirty-eight years as an electrician. Paid into the system his whole life. Built infrastructure that's still standing.

Now he feels like a burden because he never learned to navigate an app ecosystem.

And the banking industry calls this "progress."

Tech that excludes the people who created the foundation for everything we have isn't progress. It's abandonment wrapped in innovation language!

The question is never only whether to stay or go. The more fundamental question — the one underneath every other question — is whether you are willing to stop making yourself the price of whatever you decide.

Research on self-continuity and relational decision-making shows that women who prioritize self-preservation — the maintenance of their own identity, needs, voice, and dignity — within their relational choices report significantly higher long-term wellbeing regardless of whether they remained in or left their marriages, because the variable that mattered most was not the decision but the self that survived it.

You can stay and stop disappearing. You can leave and stop disappearing. The direction matters less than the commitment to taking yourself with you — to no longer treating yourself as the acceptable loss in every calculation.

You have spent long enough being the thing that gets subtracted. The bravest thing is not the big decision. It is the daily, quiet insistence on remaining someone.

What would it look like — concretely, specifically, starting this week — if you decided that your own needs, voice, and sense of self were no longer available for negotiation inside your own life?.
