And it’s that time of the year! SCIURILLI NAPULETANI. Napoli Style Fried Zucchini Flowers. This pic is from a year ago today. This week I need to go to Delicious orchards in Colts Neck which is my local source. People are starting to pick them in their home gardens too my preferred way is sentimental. The way my mom and grandmother made them. Dipped in a batter then fried. Growing up the stuffed style seemed non existent. Then one day….BOOM..every Italian restaurant was offering ricotta and mozzarella stuffed battered zucchini flowers. And homecooks started too. They are delicious anyway you make them. My usual style though is just dipping the flower in the batter and frying until golden. Definitely one of Summer’s most anticipated seasonal dishes for me!!

Sicilian Sausage, Potato and Onion Stuffed bread....called Bignolata, Briolata, "Mbinulate, "MBriulate...a saute' of sausage, olive oil, onions, potatoes, finished with a little pecorino, and rolled into a tasty dough and baked. Today's lunch. To be called this dish, these are the ingredients for it (no peppers, no chunks of cheese. no tomato)but every Sicilian cook who makes it tweaks it to their liking.

TODAY'S FOOD HOLIDAY IS NATIONAL DETROIT PIZZA DAY. A delicious Detroit Style Pizza from local Tramontos pizza pizza here in Ocean Township NJ. Detroit style is cheesy and rectangular. Thick. Focaccia like. With the cheese extending to the edges and then dripping down the sides and caramelizing the sides. It’s intense and delicious. Based on the thick crusted pizza of Sicily many Sicilian immigrants settled in Detroit and they created this SicilianAmerican style of pizza. For up until maybe 20 years ago it was pretty much contained in the Detroit region. Then the rest of the country started to make their own versions of it. Today it’s a popular national style. This version is their hot honey roni cup style that’s developed a local following. Pepperoni (roni) cups. Ricotta. Mozzarella. Sauce. Basil. Pecorino. Hot honey. It’s a pizza party on a plate. TELL US YOUR FAVORITE DETROIT PIZZA PLACES AND BETTER YET, YOUR FAVORITES IN DETROIT!! Buddy's Pizza seems to top many of the best in Detroit lists.

Good Evening!! I'm trying out my Father's Day gift for the first time...so the story is, I actually bought this for myself, the Dolce and Gabbana SICILIAN CARRETTO designed Bialetti MOKA POT for 3 cups of caffe'. I bought it in Taormina Sicily in a kitchen and housewares shop on WORLD MOKA DAY, April 21, 2026. I told my wife "give" this to me for Father's Day! So...i was "given" it yesterday and I'm still feeling very Southern Mediterranean after our trip last month. To make it's maiden voyage special. I bought some Sicilian Pastries today at Caffe' Filoncino here in Red Bank NJ at the Jersey shore, it's about 15 minutes from me. My choices were a "Cannolichio", or Mini Cannoli...and a Pistachio and Almond Paste Cookie dipped in dark chocolate. The Cannolicchio was not so great...but the Pistachio Almond paste cookie was super amazing! I served my freshy brewed caffe' in my special TAZZULELLA, a Napoletana coffee cup, that I bought in Naples at Gran Caffe' Gambrinus...Big night here at Trattoria Battaglia..lol. I'm crazy about those designs on Sicilian carts....I've wanted this pot since they came out a few years ago....and yes, i drank all 3 cups myself. lol.

So here was a great find today....at Filoncino Cafe in Red Bank NJ, a local Italian cafe and pastry shop. A Pignoli cookie ...one of the most ItalianAmerican baked goods, ever. A chewy almond paste macaroon that is studded with pignoli nuts. (pinoli in Italian). Now there's a few things here that pushed this cookie to the top of the hill. Lots of Pignoli on top AND on the bottom (haven't seen that in decades!!), and the pignoli look to be Italian pignoli, which are elongated..Pignoli from other countries tend to be squatter and short. Another plus was that NOT ONE PIGNOLI FELL INTO THE BAG...they all stayed attached to the cookie. And it was thicker than most are today...it was a pignoli lovers dream 10 out of 10 sfogliatelle is my rating on it!

PRESENTING my FATHER'S DAY DESSERT....i took care of it because I wanted my KEY LIME PIE...and it was a big hit, again. Topped with Whipped Cream "to order". lol. Can't get enough of this regional USAMerican Classic. If you'd like my recipe just ask in the comments!!!!

TUCCI!!! Now that he's completed 24 episodes in Italy, all which can be accessed thru ON DEMAND...the SEARCHING FOR ITALY episodes on CNN on demand....the TUCCI IN ITALY episodes on National Geographic Channel..TUCCI IN ITALY is currently streaming on DISNEY + and HULU. This is for the USA only, each country his series is available in has it's own schedules, (like Canada and the UK). His next series will take us on a journey of regional foods thru the UK (Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland. While many are disappointed there's not an additional Italian series, he touched on all but one of Italy's 20 regions in the 24 episodes. I'm looking forward to him showing us his adopted country where he's lived for the last 10 years and is raising his family, his wife and youngest children are British. I'm ready for his take on scones with clotted cream and jam or a proper Sunday Roast!!!
